Upstart Wins Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Las Vegas, NV - The $400,000 Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes was contested at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida on Saturday, January 24 - a Road to the Kentucky qualifying race for some of the best three year olds in the land. New York-bred Upstart was much the best on the day prevailing by an easy 5 1/2 lengths in the 1 1/16 mile test and earned 10 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby with the win - at 2-1 odds. He now ranks third on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 16 points, behind El Kabeir and International Star (both at 21). 3-2 favorite Frosted finished second while pacesetter and 3-1 third choice Bluegrass Singer wound up third. Completing the order of finish were Juan and Bina, Keen Ice, Frammento, First Down, Decision Day, and High Noon Rider, who was eased and walked off. Dom the Bomb scratched to run in the Hutcheson Stakes earlier on the card.
