Melatonin Wins Santa Anita Handicap at Santa Anita Park
The biggest race of the weekend - the $1 million Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap was contested at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Saturday, March 12. Horses four years old and upward were featured when they took to Santa Anita's dirt track and raced 1 1/4 miles. Tarabilla Farms' Melatonin shocked the field in gate-to-wire fashion winning by a stunning 4 1/4 lengths at 16-1 odds. Grade 1 winner, 22-1 shot Hard Aces finished a good second in the field of nine with 7-5 favorite Effinex getting in for third. Imperative finished fourth, followed by Point Piper, Class Leader, 5-2 second choice Donworth who was a disappointing seventh, Cyrus Alexander, and General a Rod, to complete the order of finish.
