Gun Runner Wins Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course
Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York was the scene of the $750,000 G1 Woodward Stakes on Saturday, September 2. Horses three years old and upward took to Saratoga's dirt track and raced 1 1/8 miles. Steve Asmussen trained overwhelming 1-5 race favorite Gun Runner didn't disappoint and proved why many consider him the best racehorse in the world with an easy 10 1/4 length score. His only loss in the last six starts was a second-place finish to the terrific Arrogate in the Dubai World Cup. 7-2 second choice Rally Cry finished second in the field of five and Neolithic, who led at one point faded to third at 6-1 odds. War Story and Discreet Lover completed the order of finish.
