Chitu Wins Sunland Derby at Sunland Park
Las Vegas, NV - The $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby went down at New Mexico' Sunland Park on Sunday, March 23 and acted as the final Road to the Kentucky Derby points race that awarded 50-20-10-5 points for the first to fourth place finishers. Bob Baffert's Chitu did what many expected and posted victory - by 2 1/4 lengths at 9-5 odds. Stablemate and second choice on the morning line Midnight Hawk finished an OK second while 7-2 third choice Commissioner was 4 3/4 lengths back in third, after charging on from back of the pack to grab the show spot. Rebranded took fourth, followed by Oaklawn Park invader Bourbonize, Global Strike, Garen, Tanzanite Cat, and Lawly's Goal.
