Vosburgh Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park

Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 1 Vosburgh Invitational Stakes takes place this Saturday, September 29 from Belmont Park - host of a slew of important graded stakes action that day. 2012 Vosburgh Invitational Stakes Race Favorites

Justin Phillip - raced to three consecutive sixth place finishes - last year's Vosburgh Invitational, the Grade 3 Bold Ruler and the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap all at Aqueduct before a second and a win respectively in a pair of Allowance Optional claiming. Since then Justin Phillip recorded a very impressive second in the Grade 2 True North behind Caixa Electronica, a third in the Mr. Prospector Stakes and another very good second behind long shot Poseidon's Warrior last time out in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt. He has placed in his last five starts and is one to watch on Saturday.

Sean Avery - has won five of his last six starts but endured a one year layoff between his win in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt last year and his win in the Affiliate Stakes on September 8. The Lumber Guy - has five career starts with three wins - the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes on April 21, the Miracle Wood Stakes on February 25 and a Maiden Special Weight race in January. His only losses include a fifth in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial on April 7 and a disappointing sixth last time out in the Grade 2 Peter Pan here on May 12. He returns to action after a four month layoff on Saturday.

Poseidon's Warrior - came out of nowhere in his last start and won the Grade 1 Vanderbilt Handicap - his only win since a pair of minor stakes scores to end 2011. He has to be on the Vosburgh radar despite only one graded stakes placing.

Caixa Electronica - Todd Pletcher trained Caixa Electronica had won two big races in three starts - the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic Stakes on April 4 and the Grade 2 True North Handicap on June 8 before stumbling in his last three races - a fifth in the Grade 3 James Marvin on July 20, an eighth in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational on August 4 and a fourth last time out in the Grade 1 Forgo on September 1. He also finished an OK fourth in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on May 28. Caixa Electronica is hot and cold but when hot he is one to watch.

Fort Loudon - has raced in some big events - he finished fifth in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, fourth in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes and seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Fort Loudon rattled off three straight wins between May and July of this year including the Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes at Calder but followed that up with a disappointing fifth in the Amsterdam Stakes on July 29. He bounced back impressively most recently however with a second in the Grade 1 King's Bishop on August 25 and put himself on the Vosburgh radar with that result.

Rothko - had quite a streak going (three sprint victories at Saratoga, Monmouth Park and Churchill Downs) before an impressive second place finish in his stakes debut - the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on December 26. 2012 has brought mixed results - a win in the Grade 3 Aristides Stakes on June 2 was followed by a respectable second in the Iowa Sprint Handicap. Last time out was a fifth in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt Handicap. Rothko has been a tad inconsistent but when running well he has proven to be very competitive.

Royal Currier - had a two race win streak - a Starter Handicap at Aqueduct and the Diablo Stakes at Belmont on May 10 before a third last time out here in the Affiliate Stakes. His only graded stakes action so far this year resulted in a seventh in the Grade 2 True North and a fifth in the Grade 3 Tom Fool. He has won three of his last five starts overall and could be a sneaky entry for the Vosburgh.

Little Drama - is multiple graded stakes placed and a multiple stakes winner that had had a win last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming on August 20. Before that was a second in a similar race and a seventh in the Champali Stakes at Calder in May.

Zero Rate Policy - ended 2011 in fine form - a win in the Sunshine State Stakes and a second in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes but hasn't been the same in 2012 until recently. This year Zero Rate Policy had a fourth, a fifth an eighth and a seventh - all in minor stakes races before a pair of seconds in his last two starts - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Saratoga and the Affiliate Stakes here on September 8.
