Charles Town Classic Stakes at Charles Town Races

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- The 4th running of the lucrative Grade 2 $1 million Charles Town Classic Stakes goes this Saturday April 14th from Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Horses four years old and upward will go 1 1/8 miles on Charles Town's main dirt track.

A very strong field of 10 horses will go in race 12 on Charles Town's packed Saturday schedule with a post time of 10:30 PM. A large contingent of graded stakes winners is among the 10 runners and 3 alternates in the feature race on a card loaded with stakes action.

Here is a breakdown of the contenders and what brought them to this profitable stakes race.

Charles Town Classic Stakes Race Favorites

Tres Borrachos - is the odds favorite but hasn't had a win since the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in July. Most recently Tres Borrachos was third in the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap at Fair Grounds on February 25th and before that recorded a pair of second place finishes - the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes behind Uh Oh Bango and the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap. Tres Borrachos was third at the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November and finds himself in a familiar position - on the rail.

Tackleberry - had three stakes wins last year - the Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes, the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship Stakes and the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap, a race in which he finished second in 2012 just four weeks ago after a lengthy layoff. Tackleberry has eight wins and three second place finishes in 15 career starts.

Uh Oh Bango - Uh Oh Bango most recently finished third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 3rd and before that finished second in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes after an upset win at the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes January 7th. Uh Oh Bango has placed in 14 of his 19 career starts and is running as well he ever has.

Remaining Field Entries

Pants On Fire - has had mixed results lately - wins at an Allowance Optional Claiming on March 3rd and at the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth in June and fifth place finishes last time out at the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap at Fair Grounds on April 1st and at the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth in July. Pants On Fire is a multiple graded stakes winner and could be the story on Saturday.

Duke of Mischief - a Grade 2 and two-time Grade 3 Stakes winner and is the defending champion in this race. Recently Duke of Mischief has been less than stellar - an 11th last time out in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Stakes on February 25th and a respectable fourth in the Florida Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes on January 28th. Before that was a fifth in the Harlan Holiday Stakes and another disappointing 10th in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational Handicap at Saratoga in August.

Skipshot - has raced four times already this year - a third last time out in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup Stakes on March 24th, a win in an Allowance on March 1st, an impressive fourth in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes on February 5th and a third in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on January 7th. Skipshot has five wins in 20 career starts.

Redding Colliery - has two wins in his last five starts - the Evening Attire Stakes at Aqueduct on January 28th and the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap back in August of 2010. Most recently Redding Colliery finished fourth in the Grade 3 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct on March 17th.

Norvsky - most recently finished fifth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap and before that was third at the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes on February 11th. Before that Norvsky won the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes on January 16th in impressive fashion. With the field wide open, Norvsky could be a factor.

Caixa Electronica - Todd Pletcher trained Caixa Electronica has a staggering 51 starts with 16 wins - the latest win coming at the Rise Jim Stakes at Aqueduct on January 8th. But recently he has a sixth at the Grade 2 General George Handicap on February 20th and a third in the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes at Aqueduct on February 4th.

Mister Marti Gras - has six wins in 22 career starts but has a pair of fourth place finishes recently (the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap on April 1st and the Grade 1 Clark Handicap on November 25th) and a fifth in the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap on February 25th.

Eighttofasttocatch - has won three of his last five starts - the Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Stakes, the Jennings Handicap and the Maryland Million Classic Stakes all at Laurel Park. The other two were fourth place finished in graded stakes races.

Norman Asbjornson - most recently finished third in the Grade 3 Excelsior Stakes on March 17th and before that won an Allowance Optional Claiming.

Cease - has two starts this year with one win last time out in the Maxxam Gold Cup Handicap and a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming race.
