Las Vegas, NV -- The Grade 2 Pan American Stakes comes our way from beautiful Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida this Saturday, March 24th. $150,000 is on the line for horses four years old and upward willing to go 1 ½ miles on Gulfstream's turf course.
Although the Pan American was upgraded from a Grade 3 to a Grade 2 stakes race this year, it has attracted only six quality entries. A much anticipated rematch between the first and second place horses at the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida is the biggest storyline when the six take to the track in race 10 in Gulfstream's Saturday's schedule. Post time is 5:35 PM ET.
Here is a breakdown of the participants and the credentials that brought them into this race.
Simmard - Simmard recently nosed out Newsdad at the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes on February 26th and before that was second to Muskatier at the McKnight Handicap. Simmard also holds an impressive second in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine in September. Sandwiched between the impressive results is a 13th in the Canadian International Stakes October 16th. The Mac Diarmida was Simmard's first graded stakes win but it is enough to make him the favorite in this race.

Newsdad - finished a close second to Simmard on February 26th in the Mac Diarmida and before that had an impressive seven length win in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream on January 28th. In 14 career starts, Newsdad has three wins, two seconds and three third place finishes but has yet to record a graded stakes win in seven tries.
Harrods Creek - has placed in the last two starts and could be the surprise of the race. Harrods Creek finished third last time out in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes at Woodbine and was third at the Grade 2 Red Smith Handicap before that in November at Aqueduct.
Center Divider - finished fourth most recently in the Mac Diarmida and had a fourth at the W.L. McKnight Handicap in a race that Muskatier and Simmard went 1 - 2 in November. He followed that result up with a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming race at Gulfstream on January 21st.
Hailstone - has only 12 career starts with two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. Most recently Hailstone has raced a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming races at Gulfstream finishing third on February 26th and fourth on February 5th.
Cause for Freedom - is the long shot in the Pan Am. Most recently was 10th in an Allowance Optional Claiming race on December 31st at Gulfstream and before that finished 7th at the Pay the Butler Stakes at Aqueduct in November.
