Las Vegas, NV -- The Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes comes our way from Betfair Hollywood Park this Saturday May 12th. Horses three years old will go seven furlongs on Hollywood Park's cushion track in search of their share of the $100,000 purse.
A small filed of four will start in race 3 on Hollywood Park's Saturday card with a post time of 2:03 PM. The race will act will act as a rematch between the two already heated rivals - American Act and Drill who dueled as recently as February in the San Vicente Stakes.
Let's take a look at the four entries and their recent performances that brought them into this Grade 3 event.
Drill - one of two Bob Baffert trained horses in the field, Drill first burst onto the scene by winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in September. It wasn't until five months later that Drill reemerged with an impressive win against American Act in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at this same distance on February 19th at Santa Anita. Along with the good, there is some bad as well - a disappointing fifth as a favorite in the San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita in January 22nd a ninth in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity on December 17th and a 10th at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Drill appears to be in good form ahead of the Barrera.
American Act - broke maiden on January 16th at Santa Anita over the very impressive Bob Baffert trained Bodemeister and finished second in a Maiden Special Weight at Hollywood Park in December. Since then, American Act has experience mixed results - an impressive second in the Grade 3 San Vicente behind Drill followed by a disappointing seventh in the Grade 2 San Felipe on March 10th and then an impressive win in the Harry Henson Stakes on this track on April 26th.
