Red Bank Stakes at Monmouth Park

Dave Bond | OTB Writer

Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 3 Red Bank Stakes comes our way this Wednesday, July 4th from Monmouth Park on the Jersey Shore. Horses three years old and upward will be after their share of the $100,000 purse when they go one mile on Monmouth's turf track.

A field of eight strong entries have been compiled for the Red Bank Stakes - four have been cross entered in the Poker Handicap at Belmont on the same day. It is race 10 on Monmouth's holiday Wednesday card with a post time of 5:17 PM. Let's take a look at all eight participants and what brought them to this Grade 3 event.

2012 Red Bank Stakes Race Favorites

Queen'splatekitten - Todd Pletcher trained colt is favored despite some so-so results as of late. Since a win last May in the Marine Stakes at Woodbine, he has a pair of seconds - an Allowance at Keeneland in April and at the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga last September, a fifth in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine last June and most recently a fourth in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine on May 26th. Queen'splatekitten is certainly more comfortable on turf making him one to watch.

Monument Hill - has raced six times in 2012 and has placed in all but one - a fourth last time out in the Elkwood Stakes here being the only blemish of the year. Monument Hill started 2012 with two straight wins in Claiming races at Gulfstream and had perhaps his best result on March 31st - a third in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes on that same track. Monument Hill has placed in 17 of 18 career starts including five wins, seven seconds and five third place finishes - he has never won a stakes race however.

Boots Ahead - is a multiple stakes winner but none of the graded stakes variety. Boot Ahead had four straight starts at Belmont lately with a fifth last time out in the Grade 3 Jaipur Stakes, a fourth in the Grade 3 Fort Macy Stakes, a fifth in the Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes and a win in the Third Martini Stakes last September.

Get Serious - won this race in 2010 during an incredible streak of seven wins in nine starts. One thing that Get Serious has going is the fact for the last three years he has raced exclusively at Monmouth. Last time out was an OK third in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes but before that was a trio of sixth place finishes - in the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger and a pair of minor stakes races. Get Serious looks OK at present and may be overlooked ahead of the Red Bank.

Yummy With Butter - finished second at the Ft. Lauderdale January 14th but was moved down to 6th because of interference. Since then, Yummy With Butter has been OK - a fourth in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap and a fourth in the Miami Mile Handicap at Calder on April 21 was followed by a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes here on June 10th. He did win a pair of Grade 3 events on this track last summer proving that he has the course knowledge and the speed to contend this Wednesday.

Lubash - is a multiple stakes winner that has looked decent in his last few starts (only 1 this year however). His only start in 2012 - a second in the Kingston Stakes at Belmont on May 27th. He did finish 2011 off in OK fashion as well - a third in the President's Cup Stakes was followed by a second in the Bluegrass Cat Mohawk Stakes which was followed by a slightly disappointing fifth in the Pay the Butler Stakes.

El Commodore - is another one of the entries that has looked good at times in 2012. Last time out was a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming to follow a third in the minor Henry S. Clark Stakes at Pimlico. El Commodore started 2012 with a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming and a very good second in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes.

Hermosillo - has a staggering 63 career starts but none in a graded stakes race. Hermosillo is coming off a sixth in the John J. Reilly Handicap on this track on June 2nd - his best result in quite a while!
