Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes comes our way from Woodbine Race Track this Sunday, September 16. A healthy purse of $1 million is on the line for horses three years old and upward willing to go one mile on Woodbine's main track.
The Woodbine Mile has attracted a field of nine to go in race 10 on Woodbine's Sunday card. Post time is 5:42 PM for this "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita on November 3. Here is a look at the nine entries and what brought them to this lucrative and important Grade 1 race.
Wise Dan - Wise Dan ended his 2011 campaign with impressive wins in the Grade 2 Fayette Stakes and the Grade 1 Clark Handicap and started 2012 with yet another win - the Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland in April. He continued his strong 2012 campaign with a decent second in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 16 and followed that with an impressive win by five lengths in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga on August 11. He is ranked second nationally in the weekly NTRA poll and is easily the most talented, most versatile entry in this year's Woodbine Mile. John Velazquez will be in the saddle as per usual for this most intriguing entry.
Cityscape - British bred Cityscape will make his North American debut after three wins in his last five starts in Europe - three in a row from July 2011 to March 2012. Since then he has recorded a fourth and a second place finish last time out. He comes into Sunday's race with a ton of hype and easily the most career earnings of any of the entries.
Big Band Sound - had a streak of four second place finishes before an impressive win last time out in the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes here on August 26. Those seconds include the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes in June, the Grade 2 Connaught in May and before that the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes -all results coming on this track. He also has a win in 2012 in an Allowance Optional Claiming to start the season and a fifth in the Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Big Band Sound is no slouch and comes into the Woodbine Mile in very good form.
Worthadd - Irish bred Worthadd is another horse making his North American debut on Sunday. He had a stellar career in Italy before shipping to North America and is a multiple group winner in Britain who finished a decent second last time out in a group II race in Germany July 15. He has nine wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 17 career starts.

Riding the River - has raced exclusively at Woodbine and had two straight Grade 2 wins on this track - the Nijinsky July 22 and the King Edward Stakes on June 24 before breaking through last time out with a victory in the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes on August 26. He has 19 career starts with eight wins two seconds and to third place finishes. Other impressive results for Riding the River include the 2011 Grade 2 Play the Kings Stakes - a second behind Havelock. In 2012 before the wins he had a seventh in an Allowance Optional Claiming and a fourth in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes. If his last three starts are any indication, Riding the River should be in the hunt Sunday.
Dance the Dance - is another European import that has placed in four of six starts this year but finished sixth in this race last year. Two time winner of this race Garrett Gomez will be in the saddle for Dance the Dance on Sunday.
Hunters Bay - comes into the Woodbine Mile having won three of his last four starts including the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes on July 1, the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes here on May 26 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score here in April. Last time out however was an uber-disappointing seventh in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational at Saratoga on August 4. Hunters Bay has six wins and three second place finishes in 12 career starts and will be looking for a bounce-back effort on Sunday.
Hollinger - Canadian Champion Hollinger most recently finished fourth in the Grade 2 Nijinsky here to follow a third in the Grade 1 King Edward Stakes here and a second in an Allowance race at Woodbine. Before that Hollinger finished a rather pedestrian fifth at the Grade 1 Maker's 46 Mile Stakes at Keeneland. He has three second place finishes and a third in six starts in 2012.
Arctic Fern - finished a decent third in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup here on May 27 and has had mixed results since - an eighth in the Grade 2 Highlander on June 24 was followed by a second in the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes, an Allowance score here on August 8 and a fourth last time out in the Play the King Stakes behind a few of his Woodbine Mile rivals. In 16 career starts Arctic Fern has seven wins including one minor stakes race, two seconds and one third place finish.
Race 10 on Woodbine's Sunday card with a Post Time of 5:42 PM.
