Dave Bond | OTB Writer

Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes comes our way from Woodbine Race Track in Toronto this Saturday August 4th. Horses three years old and upward will go 1 1/16 miles on Woodbine's main track in search of their share of the $150,000 purse.

The Seagram Cup is the highlight of Woodbine's Saturday card and it has attracted a field of seven for race 8. Post time is 4:50 PM. Here is a look at the seven combatants and what brought them to this Grade 3 event.

2012 Seagram Cup Stakes Race Favorites

Pool Play - is the early favorite in this race and is coming off a fourth last time out in the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes - that result after a one year layoff. In the two races prior to injury he won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs and finished second in the Grade 2 Elkhorn at Keeneland. Pool Play has shown form in the past and will be looking to put his name in the forefront once again with a good result on Saturday.

Stunning Stag - finished second in this race last year and is coming off a win last time out in the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes here on July 2nd. In his other two starts this year Stunning Stage had a disappointing sixth in the Eclipse and a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming here on June 16th. He has at least placed in 26 of 34 career starts and he certainly knows this track. Stunning Stag hasn't been brilliant but he still has to be considered a contender this week.

Seagram Cup Stakes 2012 | Remaining Field Entries

James Street - has three wins and two seconds in the last six starts. The most impressive win over that span came in August in the 2011 version of this race. The two seconds came in Grade 3 events at Woodbine as well. Last time out was a rather disappointing fifth in the Grade 3 Eclipse in his only start of 2012 to follow another fifth in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes on this track in November.

City Wolf - had a string of four straight wins including the Grade 3 Durham Cup Stakes in October interrupted by a disappointing eighth in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine on November 12th and an 11th in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes here on May 26th. Last time out was a fourth in the Grade 3 Singspiel on June 24th. After a sizzling 2011, City Wolf has yet to place in two starts in 2012 but will try with blinkers this week.

Alpha Bettor - has 16 career starts all at Woodbine. He started 2012 with a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming and followed that with a seventh in the Grade 3 Eclipse. Since then Alpha Bettor has a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming and a third in a similar race last time out on July 14th.

Incredicat - Three year old colt will try against some older competition in his graded stakes debut on Saturday. Incredicat has two wins, two seconds and a third place finish in five career starts. He has raced four straight minor stakes races with a win, a third and two seconds in his last two races including the Plate Trial and the Achievement Stakes. Saturday marks a huge step up in competition for Incredicat.

Medidocihospisurg - has 41 career starts - ALL at Woodbine. He did win the Elgin Stakes here last September but has had mixed results overall. This year Medidocihospisurg has a second and two third place finishes in six starts. If races were won by consonants in one's name then Medidocihospisurg would certainly be competitive.
