Las Vegas, NV - Another weekend of graded stakes action is in the books and what a weekend it was! There were huge upsets, photo finishes and horses that gained automatic bids into the Breeders Cup later this year. Belmont Park, Hollywood Park, Monmouth and Woodbine all saw some terrific action - let's take a look at some of the results.
At Belmont Park the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap saw third favorite Mucho Mach Man at 4-1 outrace a pair of horses listed at 6-1 - Hymn Book finished second and Trickmeister finished third with co-favorites Stay Thirst and Caixa Electronica finishing out of the money. Jockey Mike Smith guided Mucho Macho Man to an easy 2 ½ length score for his fourth stakes win.

Also at Belmont Park was the Grade 3 Victory Ride Stakes - a six furlong dash for three year old fillies. Emma's Encore at 39-1 pulled the huge upset outsprinting 6-1 Jamaican Smoke and 15-1 Tu Endie Wei. 2-5 favorite Agave Kiss was disappointing on Saturday finishing out of the money.

The main event on Hollywood's Saturday card was the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup. Favorite Game On Dude earned an automatic Breeders' Cup berth with his third stakes win of 2012. Jockey Chantal Sutherland became the first female winner of the Gold Cup in the process. Fellow Bob Baffert pupil Richard's Kid was second in the race ahead of the very strong Kettle Corn who rallied from fifth place to take third.

The other stakes race on Hollywood Park's Saturday schedule was the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile for fillies and mares three years old and upward - a race that came down to a three horse photo finish. Quiet Oasis continued her strong 2012 campaign with a win to follow up a victory in the Wilshire and a second in the Gamely earlier this year. Mega Dream was second to continue her impressive recent results and Briecat finished third.

Monmouth Park was the scene of the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes. 2-1 Todd Pletcher trained Turbo Compressor overcame the distance and earned a bid in the Breeders' Cup Turf in November with a win in just his fourth try on turf. 3-1 Air Support finished second and 15-1 Al Khali finished third for trainer Bill Mott. Highly regarded Brilliant Speed and Slim Shadey finished out of the money in the United Nations - disappointing indeed!

The Grade 2 Monmouth Cup was also contested on Saturday at Monmouth Park. Todd Pletcher trained 8-5 favorite did what was expected and won in his first start since October. Bill Mott trained Flat Out also overcame a lengthy layoff to finish second in the race. 8-1 Sloane Ranger was third.

The 78th running of the Grade 3 Ohio Derby took place at Thistletown on Saturday - a minuscule field of four was topped by the lone graded stakes winner in the field and favorite Prospective who won for the fifth time in stakes action. 3-2 second choice Politicallycorrect finished second while Z Rockstar finished third.
