Las Vegas, NV - It's Monday - that means it's time to reflect on another packed weekend of graded stakes races. Monmouth was scene of four graded stakes races on Sunday; Del Mar had a stakes race Friday and two on Saturday while Woodbine hosted the Grade 3 Royal North. There were some huge upsets, some fantastic performances and some expected outcomes - let's take a look.
We'll start with Monmouth on Sunday. The Main Event was the Grade 2 Haskell Invitational - a Grade 1 race with a purse of $1 million. Paynter recorded his first stakes win - the third straight and sixth overall Haskell for trainer Bob Baffert. Paynter served notice that his second place finish in the Belmont was no fluke. He rallied to defeat Nonios in his first ever star on dirt by 3 3/4 lengths and 28-1 long shot Stealcase who finished third. Gemologist was a disappointing sixth.
