Las Vegas, NV - Yet another weekend of graded stakes action is in the books - a slew of contenders emerged for the Breeders' Cup which comes our way in less than a month. There were races all over the country this week - big purses, big performances. Let's take a look at nine of the big races and what transpired - starting at Keeneland where there was a graded stakes race Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week.
Sent off the 4-1 favorite in a wide open field, Spring in the Air outlasted the competition by one length in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland on Friday - in the process gained an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Fillies. 15-1 Broken Spell finished second and Magical Moon was third.

On Saturday at Keeneland, 3-5 favorite Wise Dan maintained his dominance of the division with an easy win in the $750,000 Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile - his second straight Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. A pair of long shots got up for second and third - 48-1 Willcox Inn finished 2 1/4 lengths back of Wise Dan while 100-1 shot Slip and Drive came up for a very impressive third.

Joha ran away with the Grade 1, $400,000 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland Saturday in wire-to wire fashion. Late charging Dynamic Sky was second while Java's War was third. The favorite 3-1 Tizracer was a very disappointing twelfth.

5-2 favorite In Lingerie proved best on Sunday when taking on nine rivals in the Grade 1, $500,000 Spinster at Keeneland and in turn served notice that she will be one to contend with in next month's Breeders' Cup. A couple of horses coming off poor performances rounded out the top 3 - Mystical Star finished second, 2 1/4 lengths in front of Upperline.

In Saturday's Grade 2, $513,600 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park it was the 9-3 third choice Neck ' Neck that outlasted the favorites to record the one length victory. It was 3-1 Bourbon Courage that outraced the 6-5 favorite Fed Biz for second.

The Grade 2 $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup was contested at Hawthorne on Saturday. 16-1 shot Pool Play continued trainer Mark Casse's amazing weekend with a half-length score. Casse won the $400,000 Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades with Spring in the Air Oct. 5, took the Grade 2 $200,000 Mazarine Stakes Oct. 6 with Spring Venture, and saddled $400,000 Dixiana Breeders' Futurity runner-up Dynamic Sky the same afternoon. Cease was second and Eldaafer finished 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Alternation, the 4-1 favorite, showed the way but faded to last in a six-horse field.

In one of the two races for two year olds on Belmont's Saturday card 8-5 favorite Shanghai Bobby was the class of the field and ran away with the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes by five lengths. In turn, Shanghai Bobby is still undefeated heading to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Goldencents who was making his second start for trainer Doug O'Neill was second and Fortify finished third.

Saturday in Belmont Park's Grade 1, $380,000 Frizette Stakes only four started after a number of scratches before the race. It was 1-5 favorite Todd Pletcher trained Dreaming of Julia off a strong stretch run that beat out 3-1 second choice My Happy Face. Tasting was another 10 3/4 lengths back of second place My Happy Face.

At Santa Anita, Coil pulled the upset as the 7-1 fifth choice winning his first stakes race in over a year and in turn earning a berth into the Breeders' Cup Sprint with a win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship. Capital Account, also sent off at 7-1 and who beat Coil last time out in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien was second while long shot Jimmy Creed finished in third. 4-5 favorite and defending Eclipse Award winner Amazombie was fourth.
