Las Vegas, NV - The Breeders' Cup kicked off at Santa Anita on Friday with six huge races on the card. Let's take a look at the results of the six Friday races and who took home the enormous pay checks and titles of World Champions in the six divisions contested.
15-1 shot Hightail had a day to remember in the first of the Breeders' Cup races - he broke maiden, exploited a slight opening at the rail in upper stretch, and upset 1-2 favorite Merit Man by a nose in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint Nov. 2, giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas his 19th lifetime victory in the World Championships. Merit Man was a close second and filly and 7-2 third choice Sweet Shirley Mae, who rallied from last after a half-mile, finished 2 1/4 lengths further back in third with Joel Rosario aboard.
In the Grade 2 the Breeders' Cup Marathon Calidoscopio rallied from last, more than 20 lengths off the lead, to register the 10th and most important victory of his long career by 4 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park Friday. Another late closer, Sense of Purpose, finished second and 3-1 favorite Atigun, who had assumed the lead on the backstretch the second time around, was third.
French bred 11-1 shot Flotilla avoided trouble with an explosive late run down the center of the course in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park, giving jockey Christophe Lemaire his first win in the World Championships. Watsdachances finished second; Summer of Fun was third, while 3-5 favorite Sky Lantern finished seventh in the field of 14.
In the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, 4-1 second choice Beholder wired the 1 1/16 mile race for trainer Richard Mandella and jockey Garrett Gomez. 3-2 favorite Executiveprivilege entered the Juvenile Fillies owning a perfect five-for-five mark, but drifted toward the grandstand in late stretch to miss by a length on the wire. Another previously unbeaten filly Dreaming of Julia finished third another 4 1/4 lengths out of second place.
Martin Schwartz's consistent French bred, Chad Brown trained mare Zagora took the lead leaving the second turn and held off a tenacious Marketing Mix for a game victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita Park Friday - all but sealing up the Eclipse Award for her division. Marketing Mix nearly did enough but finished second while 8-5 favorite The Fugue had an unlucky trip, got caught in traffic and finished third.
Besilu Stables' Bill Mott trained Royal Delta took control after an early scramble for the lead and never looked back en route to a strong repeat victory in the main event on the Breeders' Cup Friday schedule - the $2 million Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Santa Anita Park. With the win, Mike Smith broke the record for most BC wins with 16. He had been tied with Jerry Bailey with 15. My Miss Aurelia, who sat inside behind the winner, rallied for second, while Include Me Out made a strong run into the stretch but flattened a bit to finish third.
