Las Vegas, NV - The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is in the books and as per usual, the race lived up to all of the pre-race hype at Churchill Downs. Bettors must have had an inclination of what was about to happen - late money flowed in and made Shug McGaughey's Orb the 5-1 favorite - and he delivered for his backers.
Orb rallied from sixteenth place in sloppy conditions to take the Run for the Roses by an impressive 2 1/2 lengths - the best horse under the tutelage of arguably the best trainer, ridden by the hottest jockey on the planet Joel Rosario who brought it home for one of the better owners in thoroughbred racing. Orb now heads to Pimlico for the Preakness in two weeks where he will be the unquestioned favorite.
Golden Soul, a 34-1 shot, rallied from 15th to finish second, one length in front of one of Todd Pletcher's five entries for the Derby - 6-1 second choice Revolutionary while the pace setters faded in the 1 1/4 mile test. Normandy Invasion finished an OK fourth, Mylute was fifth and was followed, in order, by Oxbow, Lines of Battle, Will Take Charge, Charming Kitten, Giant Finish, Overanalyze, Palace Malice, Java's War, Verrazano, Itsmyluckyday, Frac Daddy, Goldencents, Vyjack, and Falling Sky.
The win was the first Derby score for legendary trainer Shug McGaughey, a Lexington, Kentucky native and it was the first Derby win for Joel Rosario who was coming off a record breaking Keeneland meet and a win in the Dubai World Cup aboard Animal Kingdom.
One of the interesting storylines ahead of the Derby was Todd Pletcher and his five entries for the Run for the Roses, headed by Revolutionary who had been the favorite leading up to post time but was surpassed by Orb. Revolutionary finished an OK third while Charming Kitten was ninth; Overanalyze was 11th; early pacesetter Palace Malice was 12th; and previously unbeaten Verrazano was a very disappointing 14th. Five time Eclipse Award winning trainer Pletcher's Derby record now stands at a disappointing 1-for-36.
Jockey Rosie Napravnik had the best in Derby history for a female rider with her fifth place finish aboard Mylute, Kevin Krigger was a disappointing seventeenth in his bid aboard Goldencents to become the first black jockey since 1902 to win the Derby and the oldest trainer, D. Wayne Lukas at the tender age of 77 failed to become the oldest trainer of a Derby winner.
This year's Derby was worth $2,174,800, with $1,414,800 going to the winner. The runner-up earned $400,000, third-place $200,000, fourth-place $100,000, and the fifth-place finisher received $60,000. Attendance at Churchill Downs on Derby Day was reported as 151,616, the ninth-largest in the history of the race.
Now it is on to Pimlico and the Preakness Stakes May 18. Some of the Derby contenders expected to race that day are Orb of course, Itsmyluckyday who finished 15th in Saturday's Derby as the sixth betting choice, and Goldencents who was 16th as the third choice. Oxbow (sixth), Will Take Charge (eighth) will also race the Preakness while fifth-place finisher Mylute, ridden by Rosie Napravnik, also is a Preakness possibility.
