Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes is on tap from Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, California this Sunday, August 11. A purse of $250,000 will be on the line for fillies and mares three years old and upward willing to go 1 1/6 miles on Del Mar's turf track.
A small but quality field of six has been confirmed for the John C Mabee - race 8 on Del Mar's Saturday schedule. Post time is 5:40 PM. Here is a brief look into the past performances of all five combatants for this Grade 2 stakes.
Tiz Flirtatious - Tiz Flirtatious has been terrific in her career with six wins, three seconds and a third place finish in 10 career starts. She is coming off a second in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes behind multiple Grade 1 winner Marketing Mix after leading at Hollywood Park May 27 to follow a win in the Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes over Lady of Shamrock, a win in the minor Valentine Dancer Stakes January 23 and a pair of seconds in graded stakes races - the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel in December and the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes in November. Tiz Flirtatious has been at or near the top in every career start, has never been worse than second in six starts on grass, is the 123 pound highweight and is the one to beat Sunday. She makes her first start at Del Mar however.
Lady of Shamrock - is a five time stakes winner (two Grade 1 scores) coming off a second in the Grade 2 New York Stakes to Starformer June 29 at Belmont Park after third in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Hollywood Park May 27, a win via disqualification in the Grade 2 Santa Barbara Handicap and a second as even money favorite in the Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes March 24 behind Tiz Flirtatious. Before that was her worst career performance - a fifth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in November. She finished a close second in the Honeymoon Handicap on June 9 2012 to My Gi Gi and then bounced back with a terrific wins in the Grade 1 American Oaks a month later and in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in her last start on this track August 18 before the Breeders' Cup. She has placed in all four starts in 2013 - a win, two seconds and a third place finish and has proven not to be scared about saddling up with the best in the land. She has two wins in five starts at this distance and will wear blinkers for the first time Sunday.
My Gi Gi - won her first graded stakes June 9 in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap over Lady of Shamrock and Stormy Lucy to follow an OK second in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes on May 5. She had an OK fourth in the Del Mar Oaks on this track last August and followed that with a fifth in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita in September. She finished another ho-hum fifth in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes in her first start of the year. Last time out was a third in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile at Hollywood Park July 6. She has placed in just one of her last four graded stakes races but that came last time out. Hopes are that she can continue to trend upward this weekend.

Customer Base - finished 2012 with a nice second in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita in October for trainer Tom Proctor and has placed in all three starts of 2013 (all at Hollywood Park) while improving in every start. Last time out was a win in the minor Lucie Manet Stakes July 5 after a second in the Redondo Beach Stakes June 9 and a third in the Great Lady M. Stakes in May. She will have Mike Smith in the saddle and breaks from post 4.
Journaliste - Argentinean filly had four wins, and a second in seven career starts in her homeland before a fourth in her North American debut at the Cool Air Stakes at Hollywood Park November 23 for trainer John Sadler. She has gone on to a pair of unflattering sixths since - the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes January 26 and last time out in the minor Time to Leave Stakes at Hollywood Park May 5. She was mighty impressive in Argentina - hopes are she can get back to that form Sunday.
