Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes comes our way this Sunday, October 6 from Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will be after the winner's share of the $500,000 purse when they take to Keeneland's dirt track and go 1 1/8 miles.
The Spinster has attracted a large field of 11 females for race 11 on Keeneland's Sunday card. Post time is 4:49 PM. Let's take a brief look into the past performances of all 11 combatants for this Grade 1 stake. A win in the Spinster would mean an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Distaff in November.
Emollient - Bill Mott trained Emollient has nine career starts with four wins and two second place finishes. She had a fifth in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Oaks behind Dreaming of Julia March 30 but bounced back in a big way with a terrific nine length win in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland at 6-1 odds April 6. She followed that with a sixth as 4-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes after stumbling at the start at Pimlico May 17 and bounced back again with a win in the Grade 1 American Oaks July 13 in her only career start on grass. Last time out was another stumble however - an eighth in the Grade 1 Garden City at Belmont Park September 14. She has won every second start in her last six overall but in between wins has been some uncharacteristically poor results. If the pattern holds true Emollient is due for a win. She races against elders for the first time Sunday and will have Mike Smith in the saddle from post 5.
Byrama - was decent in 2012 with three wins, three seconds and two third place finishes in 10 starts. She has nine starts in 2013 - a good second in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland April 13, an OK third in the Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita, another third as favorite in the minor Wishing Well Stakes February 10 and a disappointing fourth in the competitive Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes January 6. Last time out was her worst performance in a while - a seventh in the competitive Grade 1 Pacific Classic after a pair of decent third in graded stakes action - in the Grade 2 A Gleam July 13 and the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes here August 3. This after her best career result - an impressive win by 3 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap at 6-1 odds June 15. Byrama has placed in nine of her last 12 and will be looking for a strong bounce back in the Spinster. She, despite the hiccup is likely one of the favorites and will have Rosie Napravnik guiding her from post 6.
On Fire Baby - endured nearly a year away from racing after being sidelined and a fourth in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes May 28, 2012. She returned to action in April of this year and incredibly posted victory in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park and followed that with a second in the Grade 2 La Troienne Stakes behind Authenticity at Churchill Downs in May. Last time out was an OK fourth in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga August 25. She has five wins, a second and a third place finish in 11 career starts and proved in her last three starts that a layoff didn't affect her all that much. She will have regular rider Joe Johnson in the reigns and will leave from post 11 Sunday.
Open Water - has been rather hit or miss for trainer Eric Guillot the last couple of years. She won the Grade 2 Marjorie Everett Handicap in May after a sixth in her first race of 2013 - the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes in January. Since her Everett score she has not been great - a fifth in the Grade 1 Vanity in June, a sixth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Saratoga July 22 , an eighth in the minor De La Rose Stakes August 3 and a fifth last time out in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga August 25. She placed in four of seven graded staked races in 2012 but was typically inconsistent along the way. She has three wins, two seconds and three third place finishes in 18 career starts and enters the Spinster in some sketchy form.
Summer Applause - has recorded six wins, and two seconds in 13 career starts and has won two of her last three starts - the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes May 18 at Pimlico and last time out in the minor Lady's Secret Stakes August 25 with a disappointing fifth in the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap sandwiched in there. Other results this year include a win in the Grade 2 Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct in March, a fourth in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom in April and a sixth in the inaugural Houston Ladies Classic Stakes at Sam Houston January 26 to start her year. She has been a tad up and down but when running right is difficult to stop.
Closing Range - has 11 career starts for trainer Philip Oliver with five wins and a second place finish - the biggest win coming in November in the Grade 3 La Prevoyante Handicap at Calder. She has failed to place in her other four graded stakes starts including a sixth last time out in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon at Del Mar September 2, a tenth in the Grade 3 Orchid in March and a sixth in The Very One Stakes in February. Closing Range did have a win in the minor Osunitas Stakes July 20 however - her best result since November. She had been unimpressive before that win and after so there is a little optimism for Closing Range ahead of the Spinster.

Wine Princess - Steve Margolis trained filly had her worst effort in some time June 15 - a last place finish in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs June 15 after pressing the pace and tiring. Since then she has recorded a pair of good seconds - last time out in the minor Locust Grove Stakes at Churchill Downs September 7 and in the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher behind Joyful Victory July 28. Before the Fleur de Lis she won three of four starts including an Allowance Optional Claiming April 27 and the Monmouth Oaks In August 2012. Sandwiched in there is a good second in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks in October - her last race before a six month layoff. She has four wins and four seconds in 10 career starts and tries Polytrack for the first time Sunday.
Sisterhood - Wesley Ward trained filly finished second in the Grade 3 Arlington Matron Stakes May 25 after a second in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland April 19. Since that time she has fallen off a tad - a fifth in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch August 3 was followed by an ugly eighth last time out in the minor Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes September 7. She has just three wins and three second place finishes in 18 career starts.
Hard to Resist - Peter Eurton trained mare has yet to place in five graded stakes races but has looked OK lately. Last time out was a second in the minor Adoration Stakes at Del Mar September 1 after a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming August 8 and a seven month layoff. She has 19 career starts with just three wins, three seconds and three third place finishes.
Sisterly Love - has nine career starts for trainer Mark Casse - two Allowance scores at Gulfstream and a MSW win at Calder October 27 were followed by an OK third in her stakes debut - the Houston Ladies Classic Stakes behind Joyful Victory January 26. She went on to a fifth in the Grade 2 Top Flight Handicap in March and a disappointing eighth as 2-1 favorite in the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes in April. She bounced back with a nice 8 1/2 length win in the minor Trillium Stakes on this track June 8 and went on to her biggest career win - the Grade 3 Ontario Matron July 20 at Woodbine. Last time out was a second in the minor Belle Mahone Stakes also at Woodbine August 25.
Hard Not to Like - made her 2012 debut with a good second place finish in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland on April 7 after a good juvenile campaign. Her only other start of 2012 came in May - a sixth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. She had a disappointing fifth in the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream February 9 after a nice win in the Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes at Gulfstream January 5 and an eight month layoff. Hard Not to Like's last three starts have been typically inconsistent - a decent third last time out in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga August 24, a sixth in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly at Woodbine July 7, a good second in the Grade 3 Gallorette May 18 and an ugly eighth in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley in April at Keeneland. If the pattern holds true Hard Not to Like is due for a poor performance.
