2013 Super Derby Race Favorite Entries

Departing - sat out the Kentucky Derby but entered the Preakness as one of the hotter entries - he finished sixth in that race but bounced back last time out with a terrific 8 3/4 length win in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer August 3. He had five starts prior to the Preakness with four wins including the Grade 3 Illinois Derby April 20 and the minor Texas Heritage Stakes at Sam Houston March 2. His only other career blemish? A third in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby March 30 at Fair Grounds. He enters as the class of the field having won five of seven career starts with a third place finish and as the even money favorite.

Bashaar - Daniel Petz trained colt broke maiden at Oaklawn Park in March and followed that with his only other career victory - an Allowance Optional Claiming by an incredible 13 lengths also at Oaklawn April 4. He made his stakes debut next and finished ninth in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes May 3 and was an OK second in the minor Prairie Mile Stakes here June 1. Last time out was a fourth behind Palace Malice, Will Take Charge and Moreno in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga July 27 after another decent result - a third in the Grade 3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows June 29. He has two wins, a second and a third place finish in nine career starts. He is the 7-2 second choice, breaks from the rail and despite some so-so results should be. Departing's biggest threat.

Super Derby 2013 | Remaining Contenders

He had a couple good results in April - a third in the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes and a second in the minor Ocala Breeders' Sales Sophomore Stakes as well. He has placed in four of his last five starts but hasn't tasted victory since the KD Juvenile in September. he goes off as the third choice at 6-1 odds Saturday.

Cameo Appearance - Wayne Catalano trained colt has just four career starts with two wins and a third place finish. Last time out was an OK third in his stakes debut - the minor Straight Line Stakes at Arlington Park August 17 after an Allowance score and a MSW victory on the same track in the summer. He looked great on dirt in the Straight Line and hopes to carry the momentum to the Super Derby at 8-1 odds on the morning line.

Holiday Mischief - is coming off a win in the minor Super Derby Prelude Stakes over Sunbean at 16-1 odds here August 3 after a second in an Allowance at Lone Star June 29 and a couple of off-the-board finishes. He finished a good second in the minor Texas Heritage Stakes at Sam Houston as well to follow and Allowance score also at Sam Houston in February. He has 11 career starts with three wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He is 10-1 on the morning line and has drawn post 2.

Treasury Bill - finished a very good second in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita in February but has struggled since especially in graded stakes action. He was eighth in the Grade 3 Rebel Stakes in March and ninth in the Grade 3 Matt Winn in June and did have an ugly tenth in the minor Coach Jimi Lee Stakes at Arlington Park July 13. Treasury Bill has a win, a second and three third place finishes in eight career starts but has finished way back in his last two graded stakes starts. He hopes to regain his early season form and will be sent off at 10-1 odds Saturday.

Runaway Stephen - has just five career starts for trainer Joseph Foster but is coming off a third place finish behind Holiday Mischief in the Super Derby Prelude Stakes here August 3. Before that was a seventh in an Allowance Optional Claiming here in June and an Allowance score in May also on this track. He has two wins and two third in five career starts and is the longest shot in the field at 20-1 odds.
