Las Vegas, NV - Three year old Kentucky Derby Hopefuls will go at it in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas Saturday, March 16. A nice purse of $600,000 is on the line as is 50 points toward qualification on the Road to the Kentucky Derby for those willing to go 1 1/16 miles on Oaklawn's dirt track. All of the top trainers will be represented in what promises to be an intriguing race.
The Rebel Stakes has attracted a strong field of 11 Derby challengers for race 10 on Oaklawn's Saturday card. Post time is 5:48 PM. Here is a look at the past performances of all 11 combatants ahead of this lucrative, points gathering Grade 2 stakes.
Super Ninety Nine - is coming off a very impressive 11 1/4 length wire-to-wire win in the Grade 3 Southwest Derby here in a race he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 102. Before that was an Allowance score by 3 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita January 31 and a good second in the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes behind stablemate Really Mr. Greeley November 22. The Bob Baffert colt is on top of his game earning triple digit Beyer Speed Figures every time out- he is the one to beat Saturday despite drawing the far outside post.
Oxbow - D. Wayne Lucas trainee started with four Maiden Special Weight races in his career with one win (in his fourth start), a third, a fourth and a seventh place finish. Since that time he has had a pair of fourths in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at 60/1 odds and Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes by just 1/2 length last time out with a great win by an incredible 11 1/2 lengths in the Grade 3 LeComte Stakes at Fairgrounds January 19 sandwiched in there.
Delhomme - Todd Pletcher trained colt has three career starts - a second in his debut at Saratoga in August, a Maiden Special Weight score at Belmont Park October 13 and an OK third last time out behind Overanalyze and Normandy Invasion in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct November 24. He drew a favorable post 4 and could contend from there Saturday.
Den's Legacy - Bob Baffert trained colt that was second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes November 3. He followed that with an impressive win in the Grade 3 Generous Stakes on turf November 24. He had a nice second in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on dirt here January 5 and followed that most recently with a second in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis February 2 after a decent third in the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park December 15. Den's Legacy has placed in his last six starts with four seconds - and some of those results came in races that Violence, Goldencents and Flashback were a part of!
Treasury Bill - Ron Ellis trained Treasury Bill had a nice 6 1/2 furlong maiden score at Santa Anita January 27 in 1:16.3 to follow and OK third in a similar race at Hollywood Park November 9. Last time out was a very good second behind Shakin It Up in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes on this track February 17. Title Contender - has five career starts for trainer Bob Baffert with a win, a second and a third place finish. Last time out was an OK second in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track February 17 after an eighth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November and a distant eleventh last time out in the Grade 2 CashCall Futurity, He had a Maiden Special Weight score September 29 and a second at Del Mar July 28. Title Contender hasn't been all that competitive in stakes action yet - no reason to think he flicks the switch Saturday.
Carve - has just two career starts for trainer Steve Asmussen- both wins. Last time out was an Allowance Optional Claiming score over Title Contender here February 17 after a Maiden Claiming win on this track January 25.
Will Take Charge - D Wayne Lukas trainee has six career starts with two wins and a second place finish. He was an ugly thirteenth four back in his graded stakes debut - the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes but went on to a second in the Remington Springboard Mile behind Texas Bling and a win in the Smarty Jones Stakes ahead of Texas Bling. Last time out was a pedestrian sixth in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes here February 18.
Texas Bling - has 12 career starts for trainer Danele Durham with two wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He had a win December 9 in the minor Remington Springboard Mile and followed that with an OK second in the Smarty Jones Stakes here January 21 but was a distant ninth last time out in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes on this track February 18.
Stormy Holiday - has five career starts for trainer McLean Robertson with two wins to start his career and a trio of fourths in stakes action to follow - last time out was in the Gazebo Stakes here March 2 after a fourth in the Smarty Jones in January and the Bellamy Road Stakes in November.
Hardrock Eleven - has one win and two seconds in seven career starts but is coming off a distant and disappointing twelfth in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds February 23. Before that was a nice second in the minor Allen's Landing Stakes at Sam Houston and a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Fair Grounds in December.
