Las Vegas, NV - Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York will play host to the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes this Sunday, July 28. A purse of $200,000 will be on the line for horses three years old and upward willing to dash 6 1/2 furlongs on Saratoga's dirt track.
A field of seven three year olds will line up in the Amsterdam Stakes - race 10 on Saratoga's Sunday card. Post time is 5:45 PM. Let's take a brief glance into the past performances of all seven combatants for this Grade 2 stakes which is a prep for the Grade 1 Bishop Stakes August 24.
Forty Tales - Todd Pletcher pupil started two-for-two in his career including an Allowance score January 5 at Parx and a MSW score at Aqueduct November 24. He was a disappointing fifth in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream March 2 after a good second in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes as 9-5 favorite February 2 but has posted two terrific wins in his last two starts - in the Grade 3 Derby Trial by a neck over Capo Bastone April 27 and the Grade 2 Woody Stephens last time out over Declan's Warrior by three quarters of a length June 8 at Belmont Park. He has won four of six career starts, will have Joel Rosario in the saddle and is one of two to beat in the Amsterdam.
Declan's Warrior - Nicholas Zito pupil has six career stars with four wins and entered the Woody Stephens on a three race win streak - in the minor Gygistar Stakes over Tenango May 22 after an impressive win in the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes over Clearly Now at Aqueduct April 6, and in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream March 6. He finished a good second to Forty Tales in the Woody Stephens and will be looking for revenge Sunday. He has been no worse than second in his career and should be neck and neck with Forty Tales in the Amsterdam.
Rainbow Heir - has just four career starts for trainer Benjamin W. Perkins and four wins - the last being his biggest to date in the six furlong Grade 3 Jersey Shore Stakes by five lengths at Monmouth Park July 4 in a race he earned a good 101 Beyer Speed Figure. He also had an Allowance score May 12 after a couple of wins at Laurel Park to star his career. He is certainly on a hot streak and could surprise in the Amsterdam.

Mico Margarita - Steve Asmussen trained colt is coming off a very nice win in the Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths at Calder July 6 after an Allowance score at Churchill Downs June 14. He has placed in eight of 10 career starts with three wins and has looked mighty impressive in his last two starts overall.
Mentor Cane - has just three career starts for trainer Jon Sherreffs and one win - that coming in his only start of 2013 - a MSW by five lengths at Belmont Park July 6. His other results were a third in a MSW back in December and a second in a similar race December 8 in his debut at Hollywood Park.
Salutos Amigos - raced in stakes company for the first time March 9 and finished a somewhat disappointing fifth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita after three MSW races produced a win by 3 3/4 lengths, a fourth and a second respectively. He followed that with another off-the-board finish - a fourth in the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes at Aqueduct April 6 and most recently was ninth in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens at Belmont Park June 8. He was highly touted in 2012 but has failed to live up to the hype so far.
Cat Five Hurricane - has 16 career starts already in his career with just two wins and two third place finishes. His last win came June 1 - an Allowance at Calder and he followed that with a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming on that same track. He has raced just two stakes races in his career - a fifth in the minor Spectacular Bid January 1 and a sixth in the minor Big Drama Stakes at Calder in May.
