2013 King Edward Stakes Race Favorites

Pender Harbour - won two-thirds of the Canadian Triple Crown in 2011 and has been up and down since. He will make his 2013 debut Sunday after a good end to his 2012 campaign - consecutive wins in the minor Bunty Lawless Stakes and Elgin Stakes on this track. Before that was a fourth in the Grade 2 Sky Classic Stakes, a decent third in the Grade 2 Nijinsky here on July 22 and a second in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes to Hunters Bay here on July 1. He has been sidelined for eight months but he demonstrated good form before the layoff. Pender Harbour has eight wins including seven stakes victories, two seconds and two third place finishes in 18 career starts for trainer Michael P. DePaulo.

Riding the River - Last year's champion grass horse in Canada is the defending champion in this race and has raced exclusively at Woodbine. He has just one start this year - a reasonable second in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes May 26 after eight months away. He had two straight Grade 2 wins on this track last summer - the Nijinsky July 22 and the King Edward Stakes on June 24 followed by a decent second in the Play the King Stakes August 26. Riding the River finished his 2012 campaign September 16 with an uncharacteristic fourth in the Woodbine Mile before his long layoff. He has eight wins, three seconds and two third place finishes in 21 career starts.

Prospective - last year's eighteenth place finisher in the Kentucky Derby won the minor Victoria Park Stakes at Woodbine on June 10 and followed that with a win in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistletown on July 7. Since that time he has been OK- an eighth in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga in July, a fifth in the minor Oklahoma Derby in September and a nice win in the minor Delta Mile Stakes at Delta Downs to end his 2012 campaign. His only races in 2013 resulted in a fourth in the minor Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay March 2 and a third last time out in an Allowance on this track April 21. He has shown good form in the past for trainer Mark Casse and could threaten the favorite if he can put it all together Sunday.

Hotep - had a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming on June 16 and followed that with a very good second in the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes in July. He continued his inconsistent ways in 2012 - a disappointing sixth in the Grade 2 Sky Classic here, a fourth in the minor Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne October 6, a third in the 2012 Autumn Stakes and a second in a minor stakes race to end the year. Hotep has two starts in 2013 - a fourth in an Allowance at Keeneland in April and a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes here May 26. He enters this year's King Edward in so-so form.

Incredicat - made his graded stakes debut in August and finished sixth in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup but has concentrated on Allowance Optional Claiming races since resulting in three sixth place finishes, a seventh and an OK second last time out on this track May 25. Incredicat has two wins, three seconds and a third place finish in 12 career starts with his last win coming back in April 2012 in the minor Wando Stakes on this track.

Any Given Royal - made his stakes debut with a nice second in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby here in September but has struggled since. He ended his 2012 campaign with a fifth in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs in November and has two starts in 2013 - a seventh in an Allowance at Keeneland in April and a third last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Woodbine May 25. He has just two wins in 14 career starts but has five seconds and four third place finishes.

Lockout - Mark Casse trained colt had a decent third in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs November 17 after two straight wins including the minor Remington Green Stakes in September. He has three unflattering starts in 2013 - a sixth in the Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup in January, a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Keeneland in April and a seventh last time out in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup here May 26.

Valentino Beauty - will race for just the fifth time in his career for trainer Barbara Minshall. He started his career with a bang - three straight wins in Maiden Claiming and Allowance races including April 20 at Keeneland. Last time out was a respectable fourth in his stakes debut - the Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes at Woodbine May 26.

So Long George - raced for the first time in stakes company in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes here in December and finished fifth but followed that with an Allowance Optional Claiming score in his only start of 2013. He enters the King Edward having won three of five and five of eight races - all on this track.
