Six older females have been confirmed for the Ogden Phipps - race 7 on Belmont Park's stacked Saturday card. Post time is 3:14 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all six entries for this lucrative Grade 1 stakes - a "Win and You're In" challenge event for the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Beholder - 2012 Eclipse Award winner as 2-year-old filly has 13 career starts with nine wins and three second place finishes - the only time she hasn't finished first or second came in her debut. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November, 2012 and won the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 2013 - impressive! She enters this weekend having won six of her last seven starts including the last four in a row - the minor Santa Lucia Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths last time out in her only start of 2014, the Breeders' Cup in November, the Zenyatta September 28 and a 3 3/4 length win in the minor Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar September 1. This after a second to Princess of Sylmar in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks way back in May, 2012. She is the reigning Eclipse Award winner for a reason - she is mighty good. Beholder is the 7-5 morning line favorite and leaves from post 5 with Gary Stevens aboard.
Princess Of Sylmar - stellar Todd Pletcher pupil has won 9 of her 12 starts with a second in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes to Close Hatches at Aqueduct April 6 and a disappointing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff being the only blemishes in the last 18 months. The wins include the minor Cat Cay Stakes at Aqueduct April 6 in her only start of 2014, the Grade 1 Beldame over Royal Delta in September, the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes August 17, the Grade 1 American Oaks July 20 at Saratoga, the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at 38-1 odds over Dreaming of Julia and Beholder, the minor Busher Stakes at Aqueduct February 2 and the Busanda Stakes by 7 1/2 lengths January 4. She also has a MSW and an Allowance Optional Claiming score. Princess Of Sylmar has won five of her last six races overall and nine of 11 and will be out to avenge an ugly showing against Beholder and Close Hatches in the Breeders' Cup. She is 9-5 on the morning line in her first start outside California and will have Javier Castellano in the saddle from the outside post.
Close Hatches - Bill Mott trainee made her stakes debut and recorded a terrific win over the stellar Princess of Sylmar in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths at Aqueduct last April 6 after two prior starts resulted in two wins. She enters this weekend on a two race win streak - the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap in gate-to-wire fashion at Oaklawn Park April 11 followed a win in the Grade 2 Azeri Stakes also on that track in March. She ended her 2013 campaign with a second to Beholder in the Breeders' Cup Distaff after another two race win streak - the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx September 21 and a 7 1/4 length score in the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park in June of 2013. She also had a decent second, 8 1/4 lengths behind Midnight Lucky in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park last May 27 and a very disappointing seventh in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks May 3 this year. Close Hatches is the 5-2 morning line third choice as she departs from the inside post with Joel Rosario in the reins.
