2014 Marshua's River Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Abaco - Shug McGaughey trained mare really came on toward the end of 2013 and enters this weekend in the best form of her career. Last time out was a win in the Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs November 9 after a second in the Grade 3 Athenia Stakes October 12 and another second in the minor Lady Baltimore Stakes in September. Abaco also had a nice four race win streak (no stakes) at the end of 2012. She has five wins, seven seconds and a third place finish in 18 career starts and is the tepid 3-1 morning line favorite Saturday. Javier Castellano gets the call from the far outside post.

Deanaallen'skitten - Chad Brown trained mare makes her graded stakes debut Saturday but enters having won two straight minor stakes races - the Starter Stakes last time out on this track December 7 and the Trevita Stakes November 6 at Aqueduct. She placed in six of seven starts in 2013 and is the 4-1 second choice on the morning line. She leaves from post 7 with Alan Garcia in the saddle.

Marshua's River Stakes 2014 | Remaining Contenders

Angelica Zapata - most recently finished second in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap at Calder December 7 after three straight minor stakes scores - the Capano Handicap November 2, the Wasted Tears Stakes on this track in August and the Nancy's Glitter Handicap in July at Calder. She has 25 career starts with nine wins, five seconds and three third place finishes and enters in the best form of her career. Angelica Zapata is the 5-1 third choice for the Marshua's River.

Viva Rafaela - Brazilian bred Todd Pletcher trained mare had two wins and a second in six starts at home before shipping to North America including the Grande Premio Diana (G1)-a classic race for 3-year-old fillies. She recorded her first win in three starts state-side last time out - an Allowance Optional Claiming at this distance on this track November 11 after an eighth and a fourth respectively in similar races at Saratoga. Viva Rafaela now has three wins and a second in nine career starts and is 15-1 on the morning line. But she brings a lot of hype and expectation into the Marshua's.

Naples Bay - won the 2012 Noble Damsel Stakes last September for her best career result and has been inconsistent since. She had five starts in 2013 - a good second in the Grade 3 Matchmaker at Monmouth Park July 28 was followed by a disappointing fifth in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel September 14 and an equally disappointing seventh last time out in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap at Calder December 7. She started her year with a fifth in the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Handicap July 2 and a fifth in the Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes at Belmont Park May 4. Naples Bay will have Joe Bravo aboard and leaves from post 6 at 6-1 odds.

Somali Lemonade -Michael Matz trained mare had her biggest result to date - a win in the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial over Miz Ida and Pianist at Parx July 2 after a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming in June and a 6 1/2 month layoff. She has been disappointing since - a sixth last time out in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap December 7 followed a fifth in the Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap November 9, a sixth in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl in September and a fifth behind Laughing among others in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga August 24. She has failed to place in her last four graded stakes starts and has just one win to show for her last six races in graded stakes company. She leaves from post 10 at 8-1 odds Saturday.

Floral Romance - Bill Mott trained mare will race in stakes company for the first time Saturday but is coming off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Belmont Park October 24. Poetic Kid - Wayne Catalano trained mare enters this weekend on a tidy four race win streak - three Allowance Optional Claiming and a Claiming race in August. Her only graded stakes action came in August 2012 - a fourth in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine. She has six wins and six seconds in 18 career starts and also comes into the Marshua's River in the best form of her career. Poetic Kid is 10-1 on the morning line and will line up in post 8.

Silverette - has finished no worse than second in 10 of 12 career starts including six wins. Last time out was a career worst effort - a fourth in the minor Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes at Keeneland October 11 after winning three of four minor stakes races earlier this year. She has five wins and two seconds in her last eight starts and could be a threat in her graded stakes debut. Silverette departs from post 5 t 12-1 odds.

Miss Montreal - is coming off a third place finish in the minor South Beach Stakes on this track December 15 after another third in the Capano Handicap in November. She had just one win in eight starts in 2013 - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Calder in May and she placed in four of those seven starts. Before being sidelined Rose to Gold was eighth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in May. She attempts to rediscover her form Saturday and is being sent off at an intriguing 20-1 odds.

Dreaming of Sophia - Main Track Only entry is a multiple stakes winner coming off a third in the Frances A Genter Stakes October 12 and a win in the minor Judy's Red Shoes Stakes at Calder in September. She has placed in her last four starts with two wins and if she hits the track will be at 4-1 odds.
