Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 3 The Very One Stakes comes our way this Saturday, February 15 from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida. Fillies and mares four years old and upward will be featured as they go 1 3/8 miles on Gulfstream's main track for a purse of $100,000.
A field of eight older females have been confirmed for The Very One Stakes - race 8 on Gulfstream's Saturday card. Post time is 4:03 PM. Let's take a look into the past performances of all eight entries for this Grade 3 stakes.
Anjaz - had seven starts in Britain with three wins and a third place finish before making her North American debut- a fourth in the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream March 30. Since then Anjaz had an impressive second ahead of Minakashi and behind Tannery in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Belmont Park May 25, she was a disappointing seventh in the Grade 2 New York Stakes and finished a good second last time out at distance in the listed Waya Stakes at Saratoga way back on August 5. Anjaz will run for the first time in six months Saturday looking for her first stakes score. She will have Jose Lezcano in the irons when she breaks from post 7 in The Very One.
Viva Rafaela - Brazilian bred Todd Pletcher trained mare had two wins and a second in six starts at home before shipping to North America including the Grande Premio Diana (G1)-a classic race for 3-year-old fillies. She recorded her first win in three starts state-side two back - an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track November 11 after an eighth and a fourth respectively in similar races at Saratoga. Last time out was a disappointing eighth in the Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes here January 4. Viva Rafaela now has three wins and a second in 10 career starts and has failed to live up to expectation in the US so far. Hopes are that a stretch out in distance will snap Viva Rafaela out of her funk - apparently she's been training well. John Velazquez will be in the saddle Saturday.
Preferential - British bred mare and Bill Mott pupil has looked good lately - a win last time out in the minor Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 20 followed a second in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon in September. She had nine starts at home with three wins, a second and a third place finish and has placed in two of five starts in North America. Saturday marks Preferential's graded stakes debut for this steadily improving mare. Julien Leparoux gets the call from post 5.

Left a Message - Thomas Proctor trained mare is coming off a disappointing seventh in the Grade 3 Endeavor Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs January 25 after a respectable third in the Grade 3 Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct November 9, a third in the minor Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 20, a fourth in the minor Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon and a nice win in the minor Flaming Page Stakes at Woodbine in August. She has three wins, four seconds and a third place finishes in 14 career starts and had been in the mix in every one of her last five starts prior to last time out. Left a Message's best work has come at the longer distances - a stretch out could do her some good. Javier Castellano will be aboard Left a Message from post 2.
Seanchai - Tom Proctor trained mare finished fourth in this race last year after an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this course, at this distance - just one of two career wins in 16 starts. Last time out was a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming here January 18 after a third in a similar race at Tampa Bay Downs in December and a second in an Allowance in October. She has placed in just two of her last seven starts overall - not a whole lot is expected Saturday. Seanchai starts from post 3 with Paco Lopez in the saddle.
Aigue Marine - British bred filly and Christophe Clement trainee had two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in eight starts at home before debuting in North America with a close third in the 2012 Long Island Handicap. She has only three starts last year - a sixth last time out in the Grade 3 Long Island Handicap November 9 followed an eight month layoff, a seventh in the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream March 30 and an Allowance Optional Claiming three weeks earlier.
Dame Marie - is coming off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Churchill Downs November 29 for trainer Eddie Kenneally after three straight fourths including the minor Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes in September and the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap at Arlington in July. Dame Marie has 16 career starts with four wins, two seconds and a third place finish but has yet to place in any one of her three graded stakes starts.
Inimitable Romanee - H Graham Motion trained mare had seven starts last year with two seconds and three third place finishes before an incredible win last time out in the Grade 3 Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct November 9. Before that was her worst performance in some time however - an eighth in the minor Ticonderoga Stakes at Belmont Park October 19. She has three wins, six seconds and five third place finishes in 20 career starts but served notice last time out that she could surprise again.
Race 8 on Gulfstream Park's Saturday card with a Post Time of 4:03 PM.
