Las Vegas, NV - Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky will play host to the Grade 1 Maker's 46 Mile this Friday, April 11. Horse four years old and upward will take to Keeneland's turf track and go one mile for the winner's share of the $300,000 purse and the possibility of beating the most dominant horse on the planet - Wise Dan.
The Maker's 46 mile has attracted a field of seven turfers to go in race 9 on Keeneland's Friday card. Post time is 5:13 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all seven combatants for this Grade 1 stakes - six of which will likely be chasing Wise Dan.
Wise Dan - The terrific six-time Eclipse Award winning and defending two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan bounced back from a second in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile October 5 on this track with a predictable win in the Breeders' Cup Mile. He was the runaway winner in Horse of the Year, Four-year-old & up male and Male turf (3yo&up) in 2013 and 2014. He has won 10 of his 11 last races ahead of this weekend and 15 of his last 17 races overall including the Breeders' Cup Mile two years in a row. He enters the Maker's Mile as the defending champion. Wise Dan makes his 2014 debut not having finished worse than second since October 2011 - impressive! He is simply the most dominant horse on the planet right now and is the defending champion in this race - the unquestioned favorite Friday having won a Keeneland record five straight graded stakes races. John Velazquez will be in the saddle from post 3, carrying the top weight of 123 pounds. Needless to say the 46 Maker's Mile is his race to lose!
Lochte - Marcus Vitali trained gelding failed to place in his first two career starts but has hit the board in his other nine career starts including three wins, three seconds and three third place finishes. He enters off a second in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita March 8 after his best career performance - a win in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap at 39-1 odds February 9 and after winning two of his previous three starts - an Allowance Optional Claiming January 24 and a maiden win December 14 in his seventh career start. He figures to be Wise Dan's biggest challenge Friday never having finished worse than third in seven career grass starts. Orlando Bocachica gets the call from gate 6.
Za Approval - raced in stakes company for the first time in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Stakes last February 23 and finished fourth but followed that with a very nice win in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream March 30 and another Grade 3 score - the Red Bank Stakes at Monmouth May 18. He raced to a second in the Woodbine Mile September 15 behind Wise Dan after a second in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile behind Obviously at Hollywood Park June 29 and recorded his best career result October 12 - a win in the Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes at Belmont Park. Za Approval went on to a second in the Breeders' Cup Mile behind Wise Dan again and was most recently fourth in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita March 8. He has four wins, three seconds and two fourth place finishes in his last nine starts overall for trainer Christophe Clement and will be looking to avenge a disappointing fourth last time out. Three times a grade III winner, Za Approval breaks from the rail with Julien Leparoux in the irons under an assigned 118 pounds.

Reload - Shug McGaughey pupil won an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream January 17 - the first time he's placed in his last five starts and followed that with an impressive win last time out over Mr. Online in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Stakes also on that track February 22. Reload had a pair of fourths in minor stakes action this past summer and went on to an eighth in the Grade 3 Ogden Phoenix Stakes on this track October 4 and a sixth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Aqueduct November 8 before his recent uptick. He enters having won his last two starts (his only two career grass races) after an unflattering stretch and is in the best form of his career. Javier Castellano has the mount on Reload, who will break from post position five under 118 pounds.
Alakazan Alakazan - Brazilian bred, Nicholas Zito trained colt has just four career starts with a win and a third place finish - the win coming in his debut in Brazil in April 2013. He has two Allowance Optional Claiming starts in North America - an eighth January 16 and a third last time out March 8 - both results at Gulfstream. He starts from post 2 with Jose Lezcano aboard.
Gentleman's Kitten - Michael Maker trained colt finished an OK third in the Grade 3 Jefferson Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs in September and has three starts at Fair Grounds since with one win - an Allowance Optional Claiming two back January 9. He was last seen running fourth in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap February 22. Gentleman's Kitten has four wins and a third place finish in nine career starts and looks for his first stakes score Friday. Rosie Napravnik rides from gate 4 Friday.
Kaigun - Mark Casse trained gelding looked good at the end of 2013 - a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream, a good third in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs November 16 and an Allowance score at Woodbine in August. This after a disappointing ninth in the listed Queen's Plate and a pedestrian seventh in the Plate Trial Stakes. He has two starts in 2014 - an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Gulfstream February 22 followed a fourth in a similar race on that same track January 17. He starts from the outside post will Alan Garcia in the saddle.
