Las Vegas, NV - The second jewel in the Triple Crown takes place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland this Saturday, May 17 when some of the best three year olds in the land line up in the $1.5 million Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. The entries will take to Pimlico's main track and go 1 3/16 miles for the winner's share of the lucrative purse and the distinction of being called a Preakness champion.
A terrific field of 10 will line up in the Main Event of the day in North American Thoroughbred racing. The Preakness Stakes is race 12 on Pimlico's Saturday schedule - post time is 6:18 PM. Here is a look at all the contenders and they odds they have been assigned.
California Chrome 3/5 - Art Sherman pupil continued to dominate last time out with a four length win in the Kentucky Derby - his fifth straight win. Before the Derby he won all four starts in relatively easy fashion. The wins include the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby April 5, over Midnight Hawk and Kristo the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes by an impressive 7 1/4 lengths (with a 107 Beyer Speed Figure) March 8 and two minor stakes races - the California Cup January 25 and the King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood Park December 22. He hasn't been touched in six months - all eyes will be on him Saturday. Victor Espinoza has the return call.
Social Inclusion 5-1 - highly regarded Manuel Azpurua trained colt made his stakes debut April 5 and finished a respectable third in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. He won his other two career starts - an Allowance score over Remsen winner Honor Code in track record time at Gulfstream March 12 by 10 lengths and after breaking maiden February 22 also on that track. He is a sneaky quick entry for the Preakness and should be at or near the front early. Luis Contreras gets the call from gate 8.
Bayern 10-1 - Bob Baffert trained colt has just four starts but has placed in all. Last time out was a good second after getting disqualified from victory in the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs April 26 after a third in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby April 12. He started his career with two straight wins - a maiden score at Santa Anita in January and an Allowance score at Santa Anita in February. He is used to being at or near the top - more is expected on Saturday. Rosie Napravnik gets the mount from post 5.
Ride On Curlin 10-1 - has finished worse than third just twice in 10 career starts - the last being an alright seventh in the Kentucky Derby. He had a good second in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby April 12 after two straight thirds in graded stakes action - the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes in March and the Grade 3 Southwest in February. He has yet to win a graded stakes race and the added distance could be a benefit. Joel Rosario will be aboard from the outside post.
Dynamic Impact 12-1 - Mark Casse pupil made his stakes debut last time out and recorded a terrific win in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne April 19 after five MSW races produces a win and two second place finishes - the win coming March 1 at Oaklawn Park. He will have Miguel Mena in the reins from again Saturday looking for his third win in a row.

General a Rod 15-1 - finished eleventh in the Kentucky Derby and was third before that in the Grade 1 Florida Derby March 29 after a second for trainer Michael Maker behind Wildcat Red in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth February 22 and a win in the minor Gulfstream Park Derby over Wildcat Red in his third career start. He also had a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Churchill Downs November 30 and a MSW score in his debut at Keeneland October 18. General A Rod now has two wins, two seconds and a third place finish in six career starts and will be looking to avenge a disappointing Derby result with a good showing here. Kid Cruz 20-1 - Linda Rice trainee is coming off two straight minor stakes wins - in his stakes debut - the minor Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Park March 8 and last time out in the Federico Tesio Stakes on this track April 19. The streak came after a second in an Allowance and a Maiden Claiming score November 22. He has three wins and a second in five career starts and looks decent ahead of his graded stakes debut. Pablo Del Monte 20-1 - Wesley Ward pupil won his first two career starts - a MSW and an Allowance at Keeneland before stepping up and finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Generous Stakes on grass at Hollywood Park November 30. Last time out was a decent third in the Blue Grass Stakes April 12 after another third in the Grade 3 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream February 1. Jeffrey Sanchez will be in the saddle from gate 9.
Ring Weekend 20-1 - H. Graham Motion trainee has steadily improved every time out in his seven race career before a second last time out in the minor Calder Derby April 5. This after a terrific win in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby March 8. He finally broke maiden at Gulfstream February 8 after a second January 18 and a pair of thirds in the fall. He will have Alan Garcia in the reins Saturday from the 4-hole.
Ria Antonia 30-1 - won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies by DQ - quite an accomplishment any way you look at it, but followed that with a rather disappointing fourth behind Untapable in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds February 22. Last time out was another disappointing sixth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks after a good second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks April 5.Before the BC triumph was a fifth in the Grade 1 Frizette and a fourth in the minor Swynford at Woodbine August 24. Ria Antonia will be looking to prove her Breeders' Cup win wasn't a fluke when she lines up against the boys Saturday. Calvin Borel rides from post 6.
