Las Vegas, NV - Santa Anita Park in beautiful Arcadia, California will play host to the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks this Saturday, April 5. A purse of $400,000 will be on the line for three year old fillies as they take to Santa Anita's dirt track and go 1 1/16 miles.
A field of eight three year old females will line up in the Santa Anita Oaks - race 5 on Santa Anita's Saturday card. Post time is 2:00 PM. Let's take a look into the credentials of all eight entries for this Grade 1 stakes.
Fashion Plate - Simon Callahan trainee broke maiden December 29 in gate to wire fashion by 6 1/2 lengths in her third career start - at Santa Anita December 29 after a third and a seventh respectively in a pair of MSW races. She made a huge statement last time out with a terrific win over Streaming in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes with a career best 83 Beyer Speed Figure on this track February 1. Fashion Plate starts from the rail with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens aboard as the likely favorite Saturday.
Arethusa - is coming off a third behind Fashion Plate in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes here February 1 after a fifth in her graded stakes debut - the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet December 7 at Hollywood Park and a win her stakes debut - the Sharp Cat Stakes on that same track November 16. Prior to those results were three MSW races which produced a second and a third place finish. She has a win, a second and two third place finishes in six career starts and should provide the field a good test Saturday. Rafael Bejarano gets the call from gate 3.
Ria Antonia - won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies by DQ - quite an accomplishment any way you look at it, but followed that with a rather disappointing fourth behind Untapable in her only start since - the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds February 22. Before the BC triumph was a fifth in the Grade 1 Frizette and a fourth in the minor Swynford at Woodbine August 24. She has two victories in her six race career - she either wins or fails to place. Ria Antonia will be looking to prove her Breeders' Cup result wasn't a fluke - a good performance Saturday will go a long way. Mike Smith will ride from post 3 for new trainer Bob Baffert in this one.
Bajan - has seven career starts for trainer Simon Callaghan - a second in her first career start in a MSW at Hollywood Park July 14 and a nice win by a nose over Southern Sunshine and Fascinating August 10 in her second. She won two straight listed stakes races in the fall - the Moccasin Stakes on this track November 9 and the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita October 13 before a sixth in her graded stakes debut - the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet December 7. Last time out was a fifth in the minor Sweet Life Stakes on this track February 15. Joe Talamo gets the mount from post 7.
