San Carlos Stakes 2014 Contenders & Odds

Las Vegas, NV - Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California will play host to the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes this Saturday, March 8. Horses four years old and upward will take to Santa Anita's main track and dash seven furlongs in search of the winner's share of the $250,000 purse.

10 older entries will line up in the San Carlos Stakes - race 7 on Santa Anita's packed Saturday card. Post time is 3:00 PM. Here is a glance into the past performances of all 10 combatants for this Grade 2 stakes.

2014 San Carlos Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Sahara Sky - Jerry Hollendorfer trained Sahara Sky raced in graded stakes company for the first time last January and recorded an impressive win in that race - the 2013 edition of the Palos Verdes by one length January 19 at 21-1 odds. He followed that with another terrific win in the 2013 San Carlos February 23. Sahara Sky ended his 2013 campaign back in May with a win in the Grade 1 Met Handicap with a 110 Beyer Speed Figure at Belmont Park after he finished a very respectable second in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap behind Swagger Jack. Last time out was a disappointing last of five in the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes here February 2 after six months away. He has won four of his last seven starts and has been worse than third just once in 10 starts dating back to January 2012 - that coming in his last start. Sahara Sky will be looking to rebound Saturday with Joel Rosario aboard from the rail.

Shakin It Up - Bob Baffert pupil raced for the first time since a fourth in the Grade 2 Sunland Derby March 24 and impressively won the Grade 1 Malibu at 17-1 odds in his only try around two turns with a 106 Beyer Speed Figure here December 26 and followed that with another impressive win January 18 in the Grade 2 Strub Stakes on this track. He also had a very nice win in the seven furlong Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita last February 17 and a decent third in the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes in November 2012. Shakin It Up has four career wins, a second and a third place finish in seven starts and has won three of his last four (all graded stakes). He has won four of five starts with one second at Santa Anita to boot. Mike Smith will be aboard from the far outside post.

Wild Dude - Jerry Hollendorfer trained colt raced in stakes company for the first time last time out and won in impressive fashion the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes over Sahara Sky here February 2 to add to a two race win streak - both Allowance races with the last coming on this track January 3. He has eight career starts with four wins, two seconds and a third place finish but his successful leap up in competition last time out raised a few eyebrows. Rafael Bejarano gets the call from post 6.

Zeewat - very impressive Jerry Hollendorfer colt has 14 career starts with seven wins including the minor California Derby over Wildcat Moon last January 12, the Gold Rush Stakes December 8 and in the minor Damascus Stakes over Flashback here November 2. Last time out he returned to the winner's circle in the minor Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate February 17 after an OK fourth in the Grade 2 Strub Stakes January 18, and his Grade 1 debut - an OK third behind Shakin It Up in the Malibu Stakes on this track December 26 - a race the he earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure. Zeewat has been very competitive so far in his career and will have Corey Nakatani in the saddle from post 3.

Clubhouse Ride - finished second in four straight races to start 2013 including Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, the Big Cap and the Grade 2 San Antonio and then went on to a terrific win in the Grade 2 Californian at Hollywood Park in June. He has failed to place in his last five starts however - a fifth last time out in the minor Joe Hernandez Stakes here February 23 after a fourth in the minor Ralph M. Hinds Handicap in September, a fifth in the minor Harry F. Brubaker Stakes in August, a sixth in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in July and a fourth in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup three weeks earlier. He has just four wins in 33 career starts and enters this weekend in sketchy form. Tyler Baze gets the call from post 2.

Big Macher - Richard Baltas trainee will make his graded stakes debut Saturday but is coming off a win in his stakes debut - the minor Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint here January 25 after a second, a third and another win respectively in Allowance races this past winter. He has three wins, a second and two third place finishes in eight career starts and will line up in gate 4 with Luis Saez aboard.

Cyclometer - is coming off a fifth in the Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint here January 25 after two wins and two seconds in his previous four starts including the minor Midnight Lute Stakes on this track January 4. He has one graded stakes start under his belt so far - a sixth in the 2013 Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park in June. Cyclometer has five wins, five seconds and three third place finishes in 18 career starts and will have Joe Talamo in the reins from post 5.

Ready for More - has 25 career starts with six wins, six seconds and four third place finishes but Saturday marks his graded stakes debut. Last time out was a fifth in his stakes debut - the minor Clocker's Corner Stakes here January 26 after an Allowance Optional Claiming score kicked off his 2014 campaign. Ready for More has just one win in the last 14 months and looks overmatched in the San Carlos. Martin Garcia has the mount from post 7.

Let's Get Crackin - has placed in his last nine starts - one win, four seconds and four third place finishes - all Allowance and Claiming races. He enters having finished second in three straight races - all Allowance races on this track. His last graded stakes action came in February 2012 - a fourth in the Grade 2 San Vicente. He steps up again his week in decent form and will leave from post 8.

Midnight Transfer - finished sixth in this race last year and went on to a second in the minor Santana Mile Stakes in March. He has just three starts since - a fifth in the Grade 2 Mervyn Leroy Handicap at Hollywood Park and then endured eight months away. He returned January 4 to a fourth in the Midnight Lute Stakes on this track and most recently finished second in an Allowance February 7. Midnight Transfer has 13 career starts with three wins and three seconds and a third place finish and will go with Victor Espinoza in the saddle from post 9.
