Las Vegas, NV - Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California will play host to the Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes on Sunday, March 16. Fillies and mares four years old and upward will be featured as they go 1 1/8 miles on Santa Anita's turf track as they search for the winner's share of the $200,000 purse.
The Santa Ana Stakes has attracted a small but solid field of seven older ladies to go in race 7 on Santa Anita's Sunday schedule. Post time is 3:30 PM. Here is a brief look into the past performances of all seven entries for this Grade 2 stakes.
Emollient - Bill Mott trained Emollient has 11 career starts with five wins and two second place finishes. She had a terrific nine length win in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland at 6-1 odds April 6, a win in the Grade 1 American Oaks July 13 and a win in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland October 6. She has won every second start in her last eight overall but in between wins has been some uncharacteristically sketchy results sprinkled in, including an OK fourth after setting the pace last time out in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf - her first try at Santa Anita. If the pattern holds true, three time Grade 1 winner Emollient is due for another win Sunday! Mike Smith will be in the saddle of the 123 pound highweight from post 6.
Emotional Kitten - Wesley Ward trained filly made her graded stakes debut with a very respectable second behind Emollient in the highly competitive Grade 1 American Oaks July 13 and followed that with a third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks August 17. Last time out was a true breakthrough - a win in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs November 16 which followed a disappointing seventh in the Grade 1 QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland in October. Emotional Kitten has placed in seven of her last eight starts with four with four wins over that span - the lone poor performance coming two back. She has been ultra-competitive the last 15 months and more of the same is expected Sunday. Victor Espinoza gets the call from post 3.
Topic - Neil Drysdale trained filly hits the track for the first time since September. She has nine career starts with two wins, a second and two third place finishes. She stepped into stakes company for the first time July 13 and finished a very respectable third in the Grade 1 American Oaks behind Emollient and Emotional Kitten and followed that with a win in the CTT and Thoroughbred Owners of California Handicap August 23 but was last of seven last time out in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive on this track in September. She will have Corey Nakatani in the saddle fro gate 4 Sunday.
Floral Romance - Bill Mott trained mare will raced in stakes company for the first time and finished seventh January 4 in the Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes at Gulfstream after an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Belmont Park October 24. Last time out was a very respectable third in the Grade 3 Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs January 25. She has three wins and a second and a third place finish in nine career starts and will have Gary Stevens aboard from the outside post.

Miss Serendipity - will make just her third North American start for trainer Ronald McAnally after 19 starts in Argentina yielded five wins, five seconds and two third place finishes. Her debut here was a troubled fourth as favorite in the minor Paseana Stakes here January 12 which she followed with another fourth in her North American graded stakes debut - the Grade 2 Buena Vista here February 17. Her last start at home was a win in the Grade 1 Estrellas Distaff in June, after a second in the Grade 3 Circulo de Propietarios de Caballerizas in May and a fourth in the Grade 2 Paseana in April. Hopes are that her impressive run at home will translate to the States in her third start on American soil. Brice Blanc will be aboard from the rail. Miss Serendipity is also entered in the Santa Margarita Stakes on Santa Anita's Saturday card.
Nickels Wild - started her career with eight MSW races with a win, two seconds and two third place finishes. She made her step up in class off a win December 5 and finished an OK fourth in the Grade 3 Robert J Frankel Stakes here December 29. In her only start of 2014 Nickels Wild had a second in an Allowance here February 9. She will have Martin Garcia aboard from the 5-hole Sunday.
Stormy Lucy - had an ugly eleventh in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and was forced into a seven month layoff. She returned to action June 9 to a fourth in the minor Redondo Beach Stakes here and followed that with a fifth in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine also in July. Stormy Lucy had a win by four lengths in the minor Miss America Stakes October 19 at Golden Gate but followed that with an eighth in the Grade 1 Matriarch at Hollywood Park December 1. Last time out was fifth on this track in the Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes February 17 after a very good second behind Customer Base in the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel here December 29. She appeared to be trending in the right direction with a win and a second in three starts before the Buena Vista and will be looking to get back on track Sunday. Rafael Bejarano gets the call from post 2.
