Las Vegas, NV - Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario will be the scene of the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes on Canada Day Tuesday, July 1. Horses three years old and upward will be featured in this Holiday Tuesday stakes as they take to Woodbine's All Weather track and go 1 1/4 miles searching for the winner's share of the $150,000 purse.
A small field of just five have been confirmed for the Dominion Day Stakes - race 8 on Woodbine's Canada Day Tuesday card. Post time is 4:35 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all five entries for this Grade 3 stakes.
Frac Daddy - raced to a sixteenth in the 2013 Kentucky Derby and was fourteenth in the Belmont Stakes for trainer Kenneth McPeek but has looked much better in eight starts since - four wins and two seconds. He enters this weekend off a nice win in his Woodbine debut - by five lengths in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes June 1 after somewhat disappointing fourth in the Grade 1 Man o' War Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack May 11, a terrific 4 3/4 length win in the Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland April 19 and a pair of good seconds - behind Red Rifle in the minor Maxxam Gold Cup at Sam Houston March 1 and in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf at Churchill Downs November 16. Frac Daddy has three wins and two seconds in his last six starts overall and enters in the best form of his career- having never been defeated on Polytrack. Luis Contreras gets the call on the overwhelming 2-5 favorite and 123 pound high weight from post 2 Tuesday.
Sky Captain - Mark Casse trained clot has two starts in 2014 with two wins - both on this track. Last time out was an Allowance Optional Claiming score May 18 after a win in an Allowance April 20 - the results after over a year away from the track. He ended 2013 on a somewhat sour note way back in April with a fifth in the minor Calder Derby which followed a distant tenth in his only graded stakes action - the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in March. Sky Captain is seen as Frac Daddy's biggest challenge off three wins and a second place finish in eight career starts. Patrick Husbands rides from the rail at 4-1 odds.
His Race to Win - has won four of his last seven starts and three of his last five including an Allowance two back and the Grade 3 Ontario Derby by 2 1/4 lengths in September. His other two results over that span were fifth place finishes including the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes last time out in this track June 1 and the minor Woodchopper Stakes three back at Fair Grounds in November. His Race to Win has had some good results on this track and will be looking to avenge a poor performance last time out. Eurico Rosa Da Silva has the mount from gate 3 at 6-1 odds as His Race to Win looks for his fourth win on Woodbine Polytrack.

Patrioticandproud - another Mark Casse trainee won the minor Toronto Cup Stakes in July 2012 on this track and went on to an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this track as well. He has been up and down since. Last time out was a second in an Allowance ahead of Sky Captain here June 15 after a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track in May - his first start of 2014. Patrioticandproud finished 2013 in August with an eighth in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup here which followed an OK third in the Grade 3 Singspeil Stakes on this track July 7, and some sketchy results before that. He did have a good second on this track in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes November 10, 2012 - the only times he has placed in four graded stakes starts. He looks for his first win overall since April, 2013 from post 4 with Jesse Campbell aboard at 8-1 odds.
Peyton - raced some big races on this track in 2012 with some unflattering results including a thirteenth in the Queen's Plate, a tenth in the Breeders' Stakes and a sixth in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby. In 2013 Peyton had a fourth in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup and was poor all year before an OK third in the 2013 Valedictory Stakes here in December. He had a sixth in the Grade 3 Eclipse here June 1 and was third in an Allowance here June 15 - inconsistent as always. Justin Stein will be in the saddle of the 15-1 longest shot in the field from the outside post.
