Las Vegas, NV - Belmont Park in Elmont, New York will be the scene of the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes on Saturday, September 12. Three year old fillies will be after the winner's share of the $500,000 purse when they take to Belmont Park's inner turf track and race 1 1/8 miles.
A contentious field of 12 sophomore females will take to the track in the Sands Point Stakes - race 9 on Belmont Park's Saturday schedule. Post time is 5:19 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all 12 combatants for this intriguing Grade 2 stakes.
Sentiero Italia - has five career starts for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin with three wins - the best of which coming last time out as favorite in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at this distance at Saratoga August 14. She made her stakes debut two starts back and finished an OK fourth in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational which followed an Allowance score by two lengths May 28 and a maiden score April 19 - in her second career start - both results against older horses. She looks for her second straight graded stakes win and her fourth win in her last five starts overall - from post 5 with Joel Rosario in the irons of the 120 pound co-highweight.
Mrs McDougal - has three wins in five career starts for trainer Chad Brown and fourth place finishes in her other two - a maiden score at first asking, an Allowance score by an impressive 7 1/4 lengths at Aqueduct April 24 and a terrific win last time out over Feathered in the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at this distance at Saratoga July 24. Mrs McDougal hopes to build off her first graded stakes score when she leaves from post 11 Saturday. Irad Ortiz will be in charge of the 120 pound co-highweight.
Miss Temple City - has placed in six of seven career starts for trainer Graham Motion and enters off a second behind Sentiero Italia in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga August 14. Before that was her only off-the-board finish - an OK fourth at 50-1 odds in the prestigious Group 1 Coronation Stakes overseas at Ascot in June, a win in the minor Hilltop Stakes at Pimlico May 14, a good second in the Grade 3 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland in April and a third in the Grade 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream in January. Miss Temple City has been competitive virtually every time out and is expected to be again Saturday. John Velazquez has been tabbed to ride the field's top earner from gate 2.
Her Emmynency - has three wins and two second place finishes in six career starts for trainer Michael Stidham and enters off a decent second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks August 15. Before that was a career worst effort - a sixth place finish in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap July 19. She finished second behind Sunset Glow in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante in August, 2014 and had two good wins after that before her ugly outing two starts back - the minor Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita in October and an Allowance Optional Claiming at Arlington June 20 - her first start of 2015. Her Emmynency, outside of one bad outing has been in every race in her career. Gary Stevens gets the call hoping to maintain that trend - from post 3.
Osaila - Irish bred Richard Hannon trained filly finished a good third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and has two wins and a second place finish in four starts since. Last time out was a second in a stakes at Goodwood July 31 and a stakes win at Ascot in June. She now has five wins including two Group 3 races in England, two seconds and a third place finish in 11 career starts and enters this week in decent form. Javier Castellano has been pegged to ride from post 9.

Cara Marie - Kellyn Gorder pupil has two wins and a third place finish in six career starts and enters off a respectable third in the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga July 24. That followed a career best effort - a front-running win in the minor Indy Star Stakes at Indiana Grand Race Course May 30. Before that was a fourth in an Allowance in April and a maiden score in December in her third career start. Cara Marie has two wins and a third place finish in her last four starts and arrives in decent form. Manuel Franco will get the call from gate 4.
Malabar - British bred filly makes her North American debut Saturday having posted three wins and a second place finish in 10 career starts. Last time out was a Group 3 stakes win against males July 31. It happened to be the only race she placed in in her last six starts at home however. Before the win was a ninth in the Group 1 Prix de Diane Longines in June and an eighth in a stakes race at Curragh in May. Malabar hadn't looked good before a nice effort last time out. Hopes are she can continue the momentum from gate 8 with Rafael Bejarano in the irons.
Marabea - British bred Christophe Clement trained filly has four career starts with three wins and a second place finish. She finished third in the Group 3 Premio Dormello in Italy where she began he career and was most recently a winner in her North American debut - an Allowance at Delaware Park July 29. Marabea has been impressive so far in her career and hopes to continue that trend from the rail with Kendrick Carmouche in the saddle.
Blond Me - Irish bred filly has two wins and two seconds in five career starts - the only blemish came in her debut. She makes her North American debut Saturday having posted a runner-up finish last time out August 22 at home and consecutive wins this past summer. Blond Me take an enormous step up in competition Saturday when she leaves from post 7 with Junior Alvarado guiding her.
Pangburn - Main Track Only Entry has nine career starts with three wins, two seconds and a third place finish. She may enter off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Saratoga August 21, an ugly eighth in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks in July and a good second in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks in June. Pangburn will be after her first graded stakes score if she does indeed race - from gate 6 with Javier Castellano in the reins.
Tapitry - Shug McGaughey trained filly has six career starts with a win, two seconds and a third place finish. She makes her stakes debut on the heels of consecutive runner-up finishes in Allowance races at Saratoga after a third and a fourth respectively in similar races this past spring. She takes a huge step up in competition Saturday hoping to make a little noise in stakes company - from gate 10 with Joe Bravo in the saddle.
Iromea - Irish bred filly has placed in all five career starts - a win, three seconds and a third place finish. She makes her North American debut Saturday off a stakes win in France July 21 and a third and a second respectively in a pair of Allowance races also in France. Iromea has been impressive so far in her career but will have the unenviable task of leaving from the outside post with Christian Demuro aboard.
