A field of nine have committed for the British Columbia Derby - race 8 in Hastings Sunday card. Post time is 4:42 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all nine entries for this Grade 3 stakes.
Academic - has seven career starts with three wins and a second place finish and enters off one of those wins - by a dominant eight lengths in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park August 15. Before that was a very disappointing DNF in the Queen's Plate July 5 and a two race win streak - the best of which coming in the Woodbine Oaks at 66/1 odds June 14. She has won three of her last four starts and looks great ahead of the weekend. Academic goes up against the males again and should be the one to beat from post 2 with Justin Stein in the saddle.
Bluegrass Angus - has placed in seven of eight career starts for trainer Craig MacPherson (four wins and three seconds) and enters on a nice three race win streak - all on this track, all minor stakes. Last time out was in the Richmond Derby Trial Handicap August 21 after the Chris Loseth Handicap in July and the River Rock Casino Handicap in June. Bluegrass Angus has been on fire of late and hopes for a fourth straight win Sunday when he departs from post 5 with Richard Hamel guiding him.
Blue Dancer - Greg Tracy trained gelding has seven wins in nine career starts - his only blemishes were a tenth after tiring in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and last time out - a disappointing fifth as favorite after setting the pace and fading in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby August 15. That result followed three straight minor stakes wins at Northlands Park- the Count Lathum Handicap July 18, the Ky Alta Stakes June 20 and the Western Canada Handicap in May. Blue Dancer had been virtually untouchable before last time out and will be out to avenge that ugly result with Rico Walcott aboard from post 3.
Mighty Fraser - has 11 career starts with four wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He won two straight Allowance races here in the spring but has been up and down since. Last time out was a good win in the minor CTHS Sales Stakes September 7 after a second in a Claiming July 25 and a pair of fifth place finishes in minor stakes action - the Chris Loseth Handicap July 1 and the River Rock Casino Handicap in June. Mighty Fraser looks to build on a good win last time out when he departs from post 7 with Shin Civic in the reins.
Purple Heaven - has two wins, three seconds and two third place finishes in 11 career starts but enters off a twelfth place finish in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby August 15. He did place in his previous five starts - a second to Blue Dancer in the minor Count Lathum Stakes July 18 after consecutive third place finishes also behind Blue Dancer - in the minor Ky Alta Stakes in June and Western Canada Handicap in May. Purple Heaven looks for his first stakes score Saturday and enters in decent form from gate 4 with Keishan Balgobin guiding him.

Before that was a fourth in the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap August 3 and a twelfth in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap in July. He leaves from the rail with Pedro Alvarado aboard hoping for his first stakes win.
Merlot - Dino K. Condilenios trained gilding has six career starts (all on this track) with two wins, a second and a third place finish. Last time out was a third behind Bluegrass Angus in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap July 1. It followed a Claiming score June 6, a sixth in the minor Jim Coleman Province Stakes in May and a second in the minor Jack Diamond Futurity last September. Merlot has been OK lately but will likely be in over his head in this one. Amadeo Perez rides from gate 6.
Percy Fawcett - won a couple of races at Golden Gate in February but has been up and down since placing in just two of six starts. Last time out was a respectable third in the minor Emerald Downs Derby August 9 which followed consecutive fourth place finishes - the minor Seattle Slew Handicap in July and the minor Coca-Cola Handicap in June. Percy Fawcett looks for his first stakes win Sunday from the outside post with David Lopez in the irons.
Sedin -has eight career starts for trainer Mark Cloutier with two wins, a second and a third place finish but has yet to place in four stakes tries. He enters off an Allowance Optional Claiming score however but it followed an eighth in the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap August 3 and a fourth in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap in July. Sedin has been OK in his career but has placed in just one of his last three starts ahead of this weekend. Antonio Reyes has been tabbed with getting Sedin his first stakes win - from gate 8.
