San Simeon Stakes 2015 at Santa Anita

Las Vegas, NV - Santa Anita in Arcadia, California will play host to the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes on Sunday, April 19. Horses four years old and upward will take to Santa Anita's downhill turf track and race about 6 1/2 furlongs searching for the winner's portion of the $100,000 purse.

Eight older horses will take part in the San Simeon - race 7 on Santa Anita's Sunday schedule. Post time is 3:30 PM. Let's take a look into the past performances of all eight combatants for this Grade 3 stakes.

2015 San Simeon Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Street Swap - defending champion in this race, John Sadler trainee posted victory here during a stretch of four wins and a second place finish in five races. He has been good since last year's San Simeon - a fifth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint was followed by a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming November 13, a third in the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes here December 28, a third in the minor Clocker's Corner Stakes January 25 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score last time out March 13. He has placed in 10 of his last 11 starts overall - competitive every time out. He leaves from the outside post 8 Sunday with Joe Talamo guiding him.

Home Run Kitten - David Hofmans pupil broke maiden in his second career start. His stakes debut resulted in a disappointing fifth - in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes February 8, 2014 but he has placed in seven of nine stakes starts since. He enters on the heels of consecutive third place finishes - the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe last time out here March 7 and the in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes on this track January 31. This after a good second in the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile here December 26, a disappointing eleventh in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and a career best effort - a win in the Grade 3 Eddie D Stakes on this track September 26. He has 13 career starts with four wins, two seconds and four thirds and has three wins, a second and two thirds in his last eight starts overall. Gary Stevens gets the mount from gate 2 hoping to keep the upward trend going.

Get Happy Mister - has an impressive 10 wins in 13 career starts and rides a five race win streak into Sunday's action - four minor stakes races. He makes his graded stakes debut off wins in the Arapahoe Park Classic, the Mount Elbert Stakes, the Front Range Stakes and the Aspen Stakes all at Arapahoe. He has one career start on this track - a fourth in the minor Santana Mile in March 2014 - that was the last time he didn't end up in the winner's circle. Get Happy Mister is red hot and looks ready for his step up in competition. He leaves from the rail with Tyler Baze aboard.

Outside Nashville - Jerry Hollendorfer multiple stakes winner won two straight races at Golden Gate this past winter including the minor Oakland Stakes before debuting in graded stakes company February 16 when he finished a disappointing eighth in the Grade 3 General George Handicap at Laurel Park. He has one start since - a fourth in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes on this track March 7. Outside Nashville has 19 career starts with five wins, two seconds and three third place finishes but will be looking to place in a graded stakes for the first time in six tries. He enters in so-so-form and will have Drayden Van Dyke in the saddle from gate 4.

Holy Lute - James Cassidy pupil won the minor El Cajon Stakes in August, 2013 and went on to a third in the Grade 2 Indiana Derby in October of 2013. After that was a tenth in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Mile and an eleventh in the Grade 1 Malibu Mile. He failed to post victory in four starts in 2014 but did have an Allowance Optional Claiming score here February 12 and a second in a similar race on this track in January. Last time out was a seventh in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile March 7. He will be after his first graded stakes score and enters in decent form with Mike Smith in the reins from post 5.

Pure Tactics - has 22 career starts with nine wins, two seconds and three third place finishes. He enters off an OK third in the minor Thunder Road Stakes April 4 and a victory in the minor Clocker's Corner Stakes on this track in January. He closed out 2014 with a sixth in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap in November and a 6 1/2 length win in the minor Lure Stakes October 26 at Santa Anita. He also had consecutive wins this past summer including an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track in July and the minor Siren Lure Stakes at Santa Anita in June. He has won four of his last eight starts but has failed to place in three races over that span. Pure Tactics looks to place in graded stakes company for the first time - from gate 6 with Kent Desormeaux aboard.

Joes Blazing Aaron - Robert Hess trained gelding has 38 career starts with seven wins, three seconds and four third place finishes. He enters off a disappointing eighth in the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes here March 21 which followed a stretch of three wins, a second and a third place finish in his six starts - no stakes. He finished fourth in the 2014 Grade 2 Pan American Stakes and he hasn't placed in graded stakes company since a second in the 2013 Canadian Turf Stakes. Joes Blazing Aaron has looked good against lesser company but was overmatched in his step up last time out. Edwin Maldonado has the mount from post 3.

U S Citizen - Peter Miller trained gelding races in graded stakes company for the first time having recorded four wins, eight seconds and four third place finishes in 25 career starts. He has placed in 11 of his last 12 starts with three wins and five seconds over that span. The only off-the-board finish the last 10 months however was his only stakes race - a fourth in the minor Joe Hernandez Stakes here February 22. U S Citizen looks ready for his step up and could be a factor Sunday from post 7 with Victor Espinoza in the irons.
