Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes will be contested at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Sunday, February 1. Horses three years old will take to Santa Anita's dirt track and race seven furlongs for a purse of $200,000.
Eight sophomores will take part in the San Vicente Stakes - race 6 on Santa Anita's Super Bowl Sunday card. Post time is 1:30 PM. Let's take a look into the past performances of all eight combatants for this Grade 2 stakes.
Texas Red - Eclipse Award runner-up for two-year-old males - Keith Desormeaux trained colt will hit the track for the sixth time off a career-changing victory last time out - by an astonishing 6 1/2 lengths in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at 13-1 odds with a field-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure. Before that win he posted a win, a second and a third place finish. He broke maiden three back at Del Mar August 20 by an impressive 1 1/2 lengths and was third two back in his stakes debut - the Grade 1 FrontRunner on this track September 27. He has won two of his last three starts and off a win on the biggest stage which happened to be on this track, he is definitely the one to beat Sunday. Kent Desormeaux rides the 123 pound highweight from gate 4.
Lord Nelson - the only other stakes winner in the field - Bob Baffert trained colt has two wins in four career starts - the best of which came by an impressive 6 3/4 lengths in the minor Speakeasy Stakes here October 13. He has failed to place in his two graded stakes starts however - a disappointing fifth behind El Kabeir and International Star - as favorite last time out in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes November 29 and a fourth - right behind Texas Red in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes in September. Lord Nelson looks to better some unflattering graded stakes results when he lines up from the rail with Rafael Bejarano aboard.
Serbian Syclone - will race in stakes company for the first time for trainer Peter Miller after three career starts yielded two wins by a combined 8 1/2 lengths. Last time out was one of those wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming here December 31 after a maiden score November 16 and an eighth in his debut November 2. He hopes to make it three wins in a row and will have Elvis Trujillo in the saddle from post 2.
Bench Warrant - has two wins and a third place finish in four career starts and is coming off one of the wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming here January 15. Before that was a fourth out of five in his only stakes action - the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming and a win at first asking - at Del Mar in July. He has looked OK and hopes for a breakthrough with Tyler Baze guiding him from post 7.

Punctuate - will hit the track for just the second time for trainer Bob Baffert. His only career start was a good one - a maiden score on this track September 27. He steps up in competition Sunday with Martin Garcia in the irons from post 5.
Jazzy Josh - makes his graded stakes debut Sunday for trainer George Papaprodromou. Last time out was a second to Bench Warrant in an Allowance Optional Claiming here January 15 after two wins to start his career - a Maiden Claiming in his debut and an Allowance Optional Claiming two back at Golden Gate - January 3. Jazzy Josh has looked good so far and hopes to continue an upward trend from post 3 with Flavian Prat in the reins from post 3.
Sir Samson - Brian Koriner trained colt broke maiden last time out - in his second career start at Los Alamitos December 12 after an eleventh in his debut on this track. Sir Samson takes an enormous step up in competition Sunday from the outside post with Joe Talamo in control.
Magic Taste - has two career starts for trainer with one second place finish. He enters off that second place finish - a Maiden Claiming here January 15 after a tenth in his debut December 26. Not a whole lot is expected when he leaves from post 6 with Omar Herrera Santos in the irons.
