Las Vegas, NV - Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California will be the scene of the Grade 1 Vanity Stakes this Saturday, May 9. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will take to Santa Anita's dirt track and go 1 1/8 miles for a purse of $300,000.
Five older females will take to the track in the Vanity Stakes - race 5 on Santa Anita's Saturday schedule. Post time is 2:30 PM. Let's take a look into the past performances of all five combatants for this Grade 1 stakes in what looks like a battle between Beholder and Warren's Veneda.
Beholder (SCRATCHED) - 2012 Eclipse Award winner as 2-year-old filly and 2013 Eclipse Award winner as three year old filly has 16 career starts with 11 wins and three second place finishes - the only time she hasn't finished first or second came in her debut and way back on June 7 in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park when she finished fourth. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November, 2012 and the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 2013 and enters this weekend having won six of her last seven starts - the minor Santa Lucia Stakes last time out by 3 3/4 length April 10 in her only other start of 2015 (she won that race in 2014 as well), the 2013 and 2014 Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes and a 3 3/4 length win in the minor Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar September 1 to go along with her Breeders' Cup scores. She is a two-time Eclipse Award winner for a reason - she is mighty good. Beholder hits the track for just the second time in nine months looking to stay on top of her game. The legendary Gary Stevens gets the call aboard the 124 pound top weight from post 3 on a track the Beholder has recorded nine wins and a second place finish in 10 career starts.
Warren's Veneda - rising star Craig Lewis trained mare has been steadily improving the last five or so months and enters this week on an impressive three race win streak - by 7 1/4 lengths with a 100 Beyer Speed Figure in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Stakes last time out here March 14, by 3 3/4 lengths in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes on this track February 14 and a nice win by 5 1/2 lengths in the minor Paseana Stakes here January 11. Before those scores was a good second behind Tiz Midnight in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at Los Alamitos and a third in the minor Betty Grable Stakes in November. She placed in just one of five starts prior to that - it's safe to say that she enters in the best form of her career. Warren's Veneda looks for her fourth straight win and will have Tyler Baze in the saddle from the rail.
Legacy - John Sadler trained mare recorded her first stakes win in July - the minor Cypress Stakes July 6 after a sixth in the Grade 2 Adoration Stakes in May and a second behind the terrific Beholder in the minor Santa Lucia Stakes April 20. She has struggled a tad lately however - a fifth last time out in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Stakes here March 14 followed consecutive fourths - in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes February 14 and in the minor Paseana Stakes here January 11. Before that was an OK third in the Grade 3 Bayakoa Stakes, an eighth in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes at Santa Anita November 2 and a sixth in the minor Tranquility Lake Stakes at Del Mar in August. She has three wins, two seconds and three third place finishes in 19 career starts and enters in so-so form. Martin Garcia has been tabbed to ride from post 5.
