Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 3 Spiral Stakes comes our way from Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky this Saturday, March 21. A group of three year olds will be after the winner's share of the $550,000 purse and the 50 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby May 2 when they go 1 1/8 miles on Turfway Park's All Weather Track.
A capacity field of 12 will give it a go in the Spiral Stakes - race 11 on Turfway Park's busy Saturday card. Post time is 6:28 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all 12 entries for this important Grade 3 stakes.
Royal Son - Todd Pletcher trained colt has five career starts with two wins and two second place finishes - his only off the board finish came in his only graded stakes action - the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs January 31. He is coming off a terrific 5 1/4 length win in on this very track in the listed John Battaglia Memorial Stakes with a field best 103 BRIS Speed rating and he did have a maiden score three back - January 8 at Gulfstream Park. Royal Son has won two of his last three starts overall and will have Rodney Prescott in the saddle of the 7-2 morning line favorite from the rail.
Metaboss - Jeff Bonde trained colt made his graded stakes debut last time out and took down the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby by 2 1/2 lengths after finally breaking maiden January - at Santa Anita January 4 in his fourth career start - both wins coming at this distance.
