2016 Sheepshead Bay Stakes Race Preview at Belmont Park

Sea Calisi 4-5 - French bred Group 2 winner, Chad Brown trained filly has placed in six of seven career starts - two wins, a second and three third place finishes. She makes her North American debut off a career worst effort - a last of seven at Ascot in October. That result followed consecutive respectable thirds including a Group 3 at Longchamp in September and that Group 2 score - the Prix de Malleret at Saint Cloud in June. Sea Calisi will be out to bounce back from an uncharacteristic effort and looks to make a little noise on North American soil when she leaves from the rail with Jose Ortiz aboard as the overwhelming morning line favorite.

Carla Bianca 3-1 - Christophe Clement trained mare and two-time group III winner in Ireland had five wins, three second and a third place finish in 13 starts in Europe. She has just one North American result - a ninth place finish in the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington in August before heading back to Europe where she posted a ninth in September and a second last time out in a stakes in October. Carla Bianca has been a tad inconsistent for sure and shoots for her first win in nearly a year Saturday. Christopher DeCarlo has the mount on the morning line second choice from the outside post 6.

Guapaza 6-1 - Chad Brown trained Chilean bred mare made her North American debut March 5 and finished a respectable third in the Grade 3 The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream after six wins, five seconds and two third place finishes in 17 career starts at home. Before shipping she posted a three race win streak including a Group 2 stakes last May. Guapaza has been impressive and hopes for her first win states-side Saturday. Manuel Franco will be in the saddle of the intriguing co-third choice from gate 2.

Nakuti 6-1 - Irish bred Graham Motion trained mare has just four wins and three runner-up finishes in 27 career starts - all of her best finishes came in Europe including a Group 3 stakes in August. Nakuti has two North American starts with two sixth place finishes - last time out in the minor Dahlia Stakes at Laurel Park and the Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in October. She looks to snap an unflattering skid Saturday and for her first win in North American when she leaves from gate 4 with Drayden Van Dyke guiding her.

Robillard 10-1 - Kiaran McLaughlin trained filly has three wins in seven career starts but hasn't looked great so far in top company. Last time out was a twelfth in the Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs November 14 which followed an Allowance score at Keeneland in October and consecutive eighth place finishes including the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga in July. Robillard chases her first stakes win having placed in just one of her last four starts overall. Kendrick Carmouche has been tabbed to ride from post 3.

Selenite 20-1 - defending third place champion in this race, David Donk trained mare hasn't been great since that result. She did win an Allowance Optional Claiming here in July but enters off a sixth in the minor Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct April 16. Before that were consecutive seventh place finishes - an Allowance Optional Claiming in November and the minor Ticonderoga Stakes in October. She has four wins and five third place finishes in 19 career starts and enters this race in less-than-spectacular form. Gabriel Saez gets the call from post 5.
