2016 San Clemente Handicap Race Preview at Del Mar Race Track

Stays in Vegas 5-2 - has five wins, a second and a third place finish in eight career starts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer - all of the wins stakes races. Last time out was an OK third in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita June 19 after a terrific win in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes May 7, a close second in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos December 12, a win in the minor Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate November 1, a victory in the Surer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita October 10 (both of those wins coming on turf), a fifth behind Songbird in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante in September and wins in the Wine Country Debutante in August and the Juan Gonzalez Memorial at first asking in July. Stays in Vegas has been very good so far and hopes to keep the roll going Saturday. Alex Solis has the mount on the morning line favorite from gate 10.

Be Mine 3-1 - has four career starts for trainer Phil D'Amato and two wins and two second place finishes. She made her stakes debut May 7 and posted a very respectable second place finish - a head behind Stays in Vegas in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes and followed that with another decent second last time out in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes June 19 - both at Santa Anita. She also had a Starter Allowance score by 5 1/2 lengths April 1 and a Maiden Claiming win at Tampa Bay in her debut. Be Mine has been in every race so far and hopes to be again Saturday. Flavien Prat gets the call on the second betting choice from post 3.

Belvoir Bay 4-1 - British bred Peter Miller trained filly has three wins and a second place finish in seven career starts. She makes her graded stakes debut Saturday off a nice win in the minor Blue Norther Stakes at Santa Anita December 27 and a ninth in her North American debut - the minor Chelsey Flower Stakes at Belmont Park in October. She had a respectable fourth in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at home before shipping. Belvoir Bay has been OK in her career so far and enters off a career-best effort. Florent Geroux will try to build on that effort from the rail as the 4-1 third choice.

Mokat 6-1 - has a win, two seconds and two third place finishes in eight career starts for trainer Richard Baltas. Last time out was an ugly thirteenth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in May which followed a respectable second behind Songbird in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oak April 9 and consecutive third place finishes - the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes March 5 and in an Allowance Optional Claiming February 5. Before that was a fourth in a similar race January 8 and a decent second in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar November 28. Mokat will be after her first stakes win and for a strong bounce back Saturday when she departs from post 9 with Kent Desormeaux in the irons of this intriguing 6-1 shot.

Lady Valeur 8-1 - Irish bred Patrick Gallagher trained filly has placed in five of seven career starts - two wins and three runner-up finishes - all at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Last time out was a disappointing fifth in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita June 19 after an impressive 1 1/2 length Allowance Optional Claiming score May 20 another fifth in the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes April 9, a second in the minor China Doll Stakes March 12 and a maiden score February 13 in her third career start. Lady Valeur has been OK and searches for her first stakes win Saturday. Rafael Bejarano gets the call from gate 2.

Jade Princess 10-1 - Bob Baffert trained filly has two wins and a second place finish in eight career starts. Last time out was a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita June 17 which followed a sixth in the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs May 6, a fourth in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes March 5 and a fifth in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes here February 6. She also had a fifth in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes September 26. Jade Princess has yet to place in four graded stakes tries and will be out to change things around from post 5 Saturday. Corps de Ballet 20-1 - has just two wins and a third place finish in eight career starts for trainer Simon Callaghan. She enters off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita May 27, an eighth in the minor Sweet Life Stakes on that track in February, a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming in January and a sixth in her only graded stakes action to date - the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes on this track in Del Mar. Corps de Ballet has placed in just one of her last four starts overall (a win last time out) - in less-than-spectacular form ahead of this weekend. She tries for her first stakes score from gate 4 with Joe Talamo aboard.

Princess Princess 20-1 - Ben Colebrook trained filly has two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in nine career starts. Last time out was a second in the minor Alywow Stakes at Woodbine June 12 which followed an Allowance score at Churchill Downs May 21, a sixth in the Grade 3 Appalachian Stakes in April and a fourth in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks in March. Princess Princess hopes to place in stakes company for the first time Saturday and arrives is so-so form. Gary Stevens will be in the saddle from gate 6.

Sweet Queen 20-1 - has placed in all three career starts for trainer Patrick Gallagher - a win, a second and a third place finish. She makes her graded stakes debut Saturday off a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming June 19 at Santa Anita, a third in the minor Blue Norther Stakes on that same track in December and a Maiden Claiming score at first asking in November. Sweet Queen has been competitive so far and steps up in decent form. Brice Blanc will be in the reins from post 7.

Mirage 20-1 - Irish bred Simon Callahan trained filly has nine career starts with three wins and a second place finish. She finished eighth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and went on to a fourth in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes in November and a sixth in the minor Blue Norther Stakes here in December. Mirage won her next two starts, the best of which was the minor China Doll Stakes on this track March 12 but has failed to place in two starts since - a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Senorita Stakes May 7 at Santa Anita followed a sixth place finish in the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes April 9. She has been a tad up and down but has shown form in the past. Alonso Quinonez will try to snap Mirage's two race funk from gate 8 Saturday.

Gone to Bali 20-1 - has three wins in seven career starts for trainer Jeff Mullins. She made her stakes debut last time out and finished a disappointing seventh in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita. Before that she won three of her previous four starts - an Allowance Optional Claiming in gate-to-wire fashion at Golden Gate April 29, a Starter Optional Claiming January 12 and a Maiden Claiming at Los Alamitos in December - with a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming sandwiched in there. Gone to Bali was good against lesser competition and hopes to make a statement Saturday with Tyler Baze in the saddle from the outside post 11.
