2016 Los Alamitos Derby Race Preview at Los Alamitos

Accelerate 2-1 - impressive John Sadler trained colt has two wins, a second and a third place finish in five career starts. He arrives on the heels of a nice two race win streak - the minor Shared Belief Stakes last time out at Del Mar August 26 and a maiden score by a terrific 8 3/4 lengths on that track July 28. The wins followed a third, a fourth and a second, which came behind the stellar Arrogate, respectively in MSW races to start his career. Accelerate looks to keep a nice roll going Saturday from post 7. Tyler Baze rides the morning line favorite.

Blackjackcat 5-2 - lightly raced Mark Glatt trained colt has four career starts and two wins. He made his stakes debut last time out and finished sixth as favorite, two lengths behind in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby September 4 after a conditional Allowance score - by 2 1/4 lengths July 23, a maiden score at Santa Anita June 5 and a fifth in his debut in May. Blackjackcat tries for a strong bounce back and for his first stakes score from the outside gate 8 Saturday with Gary Stevens guiding the morning line second choice.

Semper Fortis 3-1 - won a couple of races in the winter for trainer Doug O'Neill - the best of which was an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track in December. Since then he's posted a sixth in his only graded stakes action to date - the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita in January, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming in February and a decent second behind Accelerate last time out in the minor Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar August 26. Semper Fortis looks to build on a respectable effort when he leaves from post 5 with Santiago Gonzalez aboard the third betting choice.

Sugar Buzz 8-1 - has placed in seven of 11 career starts for trainer Efrain Miranda - four wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He enters on a nice two race win streak - the minor Robert Dupret Derby last time out at Santa Rosa August 6 and an Allowance at Oak Tree at Pleasanton July 3. He placed in two Allowance races before that. Sugar Buzz has been trending upward ahead of this weekend and could be a factor in his graded stakes debut. Norberto Arroyo has the mount from gate 6.

Curlin Road 8-1 - Steve Knapp trained colt has just one win and two second place finishes in 12 career starts. He finally broke maiden last time out September 15 on this track after he failed to place in two of his previous three - all MSW races at Del Mar. Curlin Road hasn't been great but did post a win last time out. He tries to build upon that effort from post 3 with Fernando Hernandez Perez aboard.

Mishegas 10-1 - has just three wins and two second place finishes in 13 career starts for trainer Art Sherman. He makes his graded stakes debut Saturday having failed to place in his last four starts overall. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar August 26 after a seventh in the Oceanside Stakes on that track, an eleventh in the Rainbow Stakes at Santa Anita June 18 and a fourth in the California Chrome Stakes on this track in April. He had an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita before that. Mishegas looks to snap an unflattering string Saturday when he departs from gate 2 with Stewart Elliot aboard.

Chris and Dave 20-1 - will make his stakes debut Saturday for trainer Michael Pender having posted four wins, two seconds and two third place finishes so far. He has placed in four straight ahead of this weekend - a Claiming score last time out at Del Mar August 5 followed a second in a similar race at Santa Anita June 26, another Claiming victory at Santa Anita May 26 and a third in a Claiming on this track May 1. He has been good against lesser company but takes a huge step up in competition Saturday. Martin Pedroza will be in the irons from gate 4.

Arizona Moon 20-1 - Steve Campo trained colt won the minor Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes at Turf Paradise in December and placed in three more minor stakes races to start 2016. He hasn't been all that great since - a sixth last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track September 9 followed a fifth in the minor Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar August 26 and another sixth in an Allowance Optional Claiming August 10. His only graded stakes action to date resulted in a tenth in the Grade 3 Cecil B. De Mille Stakes at Del Mar in November. Arizona Moon looks to rediscover his early career form and for his first graded stakes score from the rail Saturday. Brice Blanc rides.
