2017 Del Mar Derby Entries at Del Mar Race Track

Big Score

Has three wins, two seconds and a third-place finish in his eight career starts for Tim Yakteen. He made his graded stakes debut back on November 4 and finished an OK fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and has been up and down since - an eighth last time out in the G1 Belmont Derby Invitational July 8 followed a second in the G2 Penn Mile June 3, a third in the G2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs May 6 and a good win in in the G3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland April 7. He also had a good win in the minor Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita October 10, a second behind Bowies Hero in the minor Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes September 3 and a win at first asking - at Del Mar in July. Big Score had looked good before a bit of a dud last time out and will be in search of a strong bounce back Sunday. Flavien Prat has been tabbed to ride the tepid morning line favorite from gate 10.

Sharp Samurai 7-2

Has won four of his seven career starts (three of four since switching to turf) for trainer Mark Glatt. Last time out was a career-best score in his graded stakes debut - as favorite in the G3 La Jolla Handicap on this track August 6 which followed a win in the minor $75,000 Rainbow Stakes June 10, a fourth in the minor Singletary Stakes May 6, an Allowance Optional Claiming score by 2 1/4 lengths April 6 and a sixth in a similar race March 9. Sharp Samurai has been on a serious upward trajectory and will try to build on a nice two-stakes win streak Sunday with Gary Stevens guiding the second betting choice from post 5.

Bowies Hero 9-2

Has four wins in seven career starts for trainer Phil D'Amato. He won his first two starts - the best of which coming in the minor Del Mar Juvenile Turf September 3 but he stumbled to an eighth in his next race in the minor Zuma Beach Stakes on this track October 10. He went on to an eleventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and has been OK since. Last time out was a good 1 1/2 length win in the minor Oceanside Stakes on this track July 19 which followed a fourth in the G2 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park June 3 and a nice win over Sharp Samurai among others in the minor Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita May 6. Bowies Hero will be after a first graded stakes score, a third stakes victory in four starts and a third win in three starts on Del Mar grass. Tiago Josue Pereira has been tabbed to ride the third choicefrom post 3.

Fashion Business 6-1

British bred Phil D'Amato trained gelding has one win, three seconds and a third-place finish in his seven career starts. He made his graded stakes debut last time out and finished a respectable second, a head back of Sharp Samurai in the G3 La Jolla Handicap on this track August 6 after a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track July 2, a seventh in the minor Rainbow Stakes at Santa Anita June 10, a third in an Allowance May 18 and an eighth in the minor Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita May 6. Fashion Business has been OK but hopes to snap a five-race losing streak from gate 6 Sunday. Joe Talamo rides.

Colonist 6-1

Jerry Hollendorfer trained colt has placed in four of his six career starts - two wins and two third-place finishes. He made his stakes debut July 15 and finished fourth of five in the G3 Los Alamitos Derby and followed that with an OK third last time out in the G3 La Jolla Handicap on this track August 6. Before those results was his worst career-effort - a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming May 21 and two straight wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming April 29 and a MSW April 2. He finished third in his debut in March. Colonist has been OK against lesser competition and will try for a first stakes score Sunday when he departs from post 7 with Rafael Bejarano in the saddle.

Sorry Erik 6-1

Keith Desormeaux trained colt has four wins and a runner-up finish in his 13 career starts. He won two straight races to start his year at Santa Anita including an Allowance Optional Claiming February 2 and has been just OK since. Last time out was an Allowance Optional Claiming score here July 22 which followed a fourth in the G2 Ohio Derby at Thistletown June 24, a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita May 18, a fifth in the G2 Louisiana Derby February 1 and a seventh in the G2 Risen Star Stakes February 25 - both at Fair Grounds. Sorry Erik shoots for his first stakes score Saturday in so-so form and will have Kent Desormeaux in the irons from post 9.

Marckie's Water 12-1

Richard Baltas trained colt has two wins and a third-place finish in his seven career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut Sunday off a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming here July 22 and two straight wins - the minor Snow Chief Stakes at Santa Anita May 29 and a MSW on that track April 22. Marckie's Water steps up in decent form and will have Corey Nakatani guiding him from gate 4.

Monster Man 20-1

Has two wins and a third-place finish in nine career starts for trainer Scott Hansen. He stepped into graded stakes company for the first time last time out and finished a distant eighth in the G3 La Jolla Handicap on this track August 6. He was OK before that - a third in the minor Rainbow Stakes at Santa Anita June 10 followed an Allowance Optional Claiming score on that track May 18 and off-the-board finishes in two minor stakes races - a fifth in the Singletary Stakes May 6 and a sixth in the Pasadena Stakes in March. He broke maiden in the race prior to that. Monster Man has been so-so lately and will be after a first stakes win Sunday with Santiago Gonzalez in the reins from gate 2.

Harbour Master 20-1

British bred James Cassidy trained colt has two wins and three second-place finishes in 10 career starts. He steps into graded stakes company for the first time Sunday off a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming here August 12, a thirteenth in the minor Oceanside Stakes on this track July 19, an eighth in the listed Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita in November and a fourth in his North American debut - the listed Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita in October. He had two wins and two seconds in his last four starts at home. Harbour Master was a serious threat in Europe and hopes to finally break through in North America when he leaves from the rail with Victor Espinoza in the reins.

Double Touch 20-1

British bred Dan Blacker trained gelding has two wins, a second and a third-place finish in nine career starts. He made his graded stakes last time out and finished a disappointing seventh in the G3 La Jolla Handicap on this track August 6 after a respectable Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita June 30, a ninth in the minor Singletary Stakes on that track May 6 and a second in his North American debut - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita April 6. He failed to place in his last two starts at home. Double Touch has been inconsistent in his career so far but hopes to finally make a name for himself from gate 8. Tyler Baze has the mount.

Ritzy A.P. 30-1

Has one win and two second-place finishes in six career starts for trainer Dan Blacker. He enters off a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming here August 12, a second in a similar race at Santa Anita June 9 and a sixth in his only graded stakes action to date - the G2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs May 6. Before that was a fifth in the listed Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita March and a maiden score in his second career start - also at Santa Anita. Ritzy A.P. has been just OK in his career so far and will chase a first stakes score from the outside post 11. Evin Roman gets the call.
