A field of nine will take to the track in the Hollywood Turf Cup - race 7 on Del Mar's Friday schedule. Post time is 3:30 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all nine entries for this intriguing G2 stakes.
Defending third-place finisher - French bred Patrick Gallagher trained gelding has been up and down in his career and enters this week in OK form. Last time out was a decent third with a career-best 113 Beyer Speed Figure in the G1 Pattison Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine October 15 which followed another third in the G2 Del Mar Handicap August 19, a fourth in the G3 American Stakes at Santa Anita July 4 and a respectable second in the G3 All American Stakes at Golden Gate May 29. Other results include an ugly twelfth in the G2 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita March 25 and two more thirds - the G2 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita February 4 and the G2 Hollywood Turf Cup. In 2016 he won the G2 San Marcos Stakes and the San Gabriel Stakes at 46-1 odds but hasn't posted victory since. Flamboyant now has five wins, four seconds and nine third place finishes in 30 career starts, has placed in three of his last four starts overall, has been knocking on the door lately and looks like the one to beat Friday. He will chase a first win in 21 months with Brice Blanc guiding the 124-pound highweight and morning line favorite from post 3.
Thomas Proctor trained gelding has won five of his seven career starts. He made his graded stakes debut last time out and finished fifth in the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita October 1 after a nice three-race win streak - including two Allowance Optional Claiming races on this track this past summer. He has been good against lesser company and hopes for a breakthrough in stakes action on a track he's won both career starts - from the rail Friday. Drayden Van Dyke will be in the saddle of the second betting choice.
James Cassidy trained colt has three wins and two second-place finishes in his 11 career starts. He arrives off a respectable second in the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita October 1 which followed consecutive fourths including the G2 Del Mar Handicap August 19. He failed to place in his previous two graded stakes starts as well including the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. Prime Attraction looked decent last time out and will chase a first stakes score on the heels of that result - from post 7 with Victor Espinoza in the irons of the co-third choice.
Has 13 career starts for trainer Graham Motion with two wins, two seconds and four third-place finishes. Last time out was an OK third in the G3 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 22 which followed a fifth in the G3 Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga September 2, a second in the G3 Waya Stakes on that track August 5, a third in the minor River Memories Stakes at Belmont Park July 9 and an Allowance score on that track in June. Lottie will be after a first stakes score and enters in decent form from gate 2 Friday. Rafael Bejarano has been tabbed to ride another one of the morning line third choices. Lottie is cross-entered in the Red Carpet Handicap on Thursday
Has 10 career starts for trainer Michael McCarthy with three wins, a second and a third-place finish. Last time out was an OK second in the minor Lure Stakes on this track November 2 which followed a fifth in the minor Obviously Mile Stakes at Santa Anita October 7 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this track July 30. He has three career graded stakes starts - a third in the G3 American Derby at Arlington in July, 2016, a fifth in the G3 Arlington Classic Stakes in May of 2016 and an eighth in the 2015 G3 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes. Tequila Joe has been OK lately and chases a first stakes win Friday with Flavien Prat in the irons from gate 4 at 6-1.
Has four wins, three seconds and a third-place finish in 16 career starts for trainer James Toner. He enters off a disappointing seventh in the G3 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland October 19 which followed an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Belmont Park September 20, a second in a similar race at Saratoga August 19 and a fourth in his only other graded stakes action to date - the G3 Arlington Handicap July 8. Before that were two Allowance scores - one coming on this track April 27. Manitoulin has been decent against lesser company but has yet to record a stakes win. Jockey Mike Smith will try to change all of that on the last of the 6-1 third choices - from gate 8 Friday.
Argentinean bred John Sadler trainee has six wins, three seconds and four third-place finishes in 33 career starts - he was OK at home and has been OK in North America as well. He enters off a respectable second in the G2 Marathon Stakes on this track November 3 after a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Los Alamitos September 24 and a fourth in the G3 Cougar II Handicap on this track July 26. Before that was a third in a Claiming race at Santa Anita June 9 which, a fifth in the G3 Tokyo City Cup on that track April 2 and wins in two of his previous three starts - an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita March 11 and another Allowance score by a staggering 26 1/2 lengths January 1 at Santa Anita. Infobedad has been just OK and will be after a first stakes score from post 5 Friday with Joe Talamo aboard.
Jack Carava trainee has three wins, two seconds and three third-place finishes in his 16 career starts. He started his career in Europe where he was just OK and has been typically up-and-down in North America. Last time out was an OK fourth in the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita October 1 which followed a fifth in the G2 Del Mar Handicap August 19 and a terrific breakthrough win in the G3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita April 22. Before that was a seventh in the G2 San Luis Rey Stakes in March, a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming in February and three straight fifths including the 2016 G1 Sword Dancer Stakes. Inordinate will try to channel her form from three starts back but enters in just so-so form overall. Corey Nakatani gets the call from the outside post 9.
James Cassidy trained colt has just two wins in 17 career starts to go along with three seconds and four third-place finishes. He enters off consecutive ugly ninths - an Allowance Optional Claiming October 15 and the G2 Charles Whittingham Stakes May 28 - both at Santa Anita. He placed in his previous three including an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita in April. Prince of Arabia shoots for a first stakes score and tries to snap out of a major funk when he leaves from gate 6 with Tiago Pereira in the reins.
