2017 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Entries at Santa Anita Park

Dortmund - was last seen running fourth as favorite in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile November 4 after second in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes on this track October 1, a third behind California Chrome and Beholder in the G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar August 20, a second, a half length behind California Chrome in the G2 San Diego Handicap July 23, eight months away and a win the G3 Native Diver Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths November 28, 2015. He had another win in the minor Big Bear Stakes at Santa Anita a month before that. Other results include an OK fourth in the 2015 Preakness Stakes and a respectable third in the Kentucky Derby as well. He won his first six career starts before that including the G1 Santa Anita Derby April 4, 2015, in gate-to-wire fashion in the G2 San Felipe Stakes March 7, the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes February 7, and the G1 Los Alamitos Futurity. He now has eight wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 14 career starts - competitive every time out. Victor Espinoza has been tabbed to ride in Dortmund's turf debut from gate 4.

Bolo - defending runner-up in this race has 13 career starts with five wins, a second and two third place finishes for trainer Carla Gaines. He was last seen winning the G2 Arcadia Stakes on this track February 11 - his second straight win in that race. Before that was an ugly ninth in the G2 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar, a tenth in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs May 7, a respectable second behind What a View in the 2016 G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March and that win in the G2 Arcadia Stakes February 13. Other results of note include a disappointing twelfth in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, a third in the 2015 G1 Santa Anita Derby April 4 and another third in the G2 San Felipe Stakes - his graded stakes bow March 7, 2015. Bolo had been largely underwhelming before last time out, has three wins and a second from five tries at a mile on turf and hopes to build off a strong effort with Mike Smith in the saddle from post 3.

What A View - defending champion in this race - Kenneth Black trained gelding has six wins and four second place finishes in 16 career starts. He arrives off a runner-up finish behind Bolo in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 11 which followed another second behind graded winner Ashleyluvssugar in the minor California Cup Turf Classic here January 28 and some bad results - a sixth in the G2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 26, a last of fourteen after tiring in the Breeders' Cup Mile and an eighth in the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland October 8. He won four straight to start 2016 - the G3 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita April 9, the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March, the minor California Cup Turf Classic January 30 and an Allowance Optional Claiming December 26 of 2015. What a View was terrific before his layoff and has been trending upward ahead of this race. He tries to snap a five race losing streak Saturday with Tyler Baze guiding him from post 7.

Conquest Enforcer - has eight career starts for trainer Mark Casse with five nice wins and three third place finishes - competitive every time out. He debuted with a fourth in the G2 Summer Stakes in September, 2015 and then reeled off three straight minor stakes scores that year- the Charlie Barley Stakes July 3, by 7 3/4 lengths in the Queenston Stakes May 21 and by 6 3/4 lengths in the Cup and Saucer Stakes in October - the latest two in gate-to-wire fashion. He has been good in five starts since as well - a third last time out behind Bolo and What a View in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 11 followed a great win with an eye-opening 99 Beyer Speed Figure in the G2 Mathis Brothers Mile here December 26, a third in the G2 Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine October 16, a win in the minor Allied Forces Stakes at Belmont Park September 11 and a respectable third in the G2 Play the King Stakes August 20. Conquest Enforcer has been good, has two wins and a third from four starts at a mile on turf and will chase his second graded stakes score in three starts with Flavien Prat in the irons from gate 6.

Flamboyant - French bred Peter Gallagher trained gelding has been up and down in his career and enters this week in typically inconsistent form - a third last time out in the G2 San Marcos here February 4 after another third in the G2 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar November. Those results followed consecutive eighths including the G2 John Henry Turf Cup at Santa Anita October 2 and the G2 Del Mar Handicap in August. He had an OK third in the G3 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar July 17 and a quality fifth in the Group 1 Dubai Turf at Meydan March 26 against some of the best turf horses on the planet. He won the G2 San Marcos Stakes in February, 2016 and the San Gabriel Stakes at 46-1 odds last January as well. Flamboyant now has five wins, three seconds and seven third place finishes in 25 career starts and will be after his first win in 13 months. Brice Blanc gets the call from gate 2.

Ring Weekend - 2015 winner of this race returned from a 14 month layoff May 21 for trainer Graham Motion and finished a very respectable second in the G2 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico and followed that with an uncharacteristic sixth in the G1 Fourstardave Handicap August 20 and a good win in the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga September 5. He enters this week having failed to place in four of his last five starts - a fourth last time out in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 11 followed a fifth as favorite in the G3 San Gabriel Stakes here January 7, a good win in the G2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 26 and consecutive uncharacteristic seventh place finishes - the BC Mile November 5 and the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland October 8. He also had wins in the G3 Saranac Stakes in September, 2014 and the G3 Hill Prince Stakes a month later. Ring Weekend now has seven wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in 22 career starts and enters in typically inconsistent form. Rafael Bejarano will be in the reins from post 5.

Bal a Bali - defending third place finisher in this race - Brazilian Triple Crown winner and 2014 Brazilian Horse of the Year, Richard Mandella trainee has 13 wins, a second and four third place finishes in 22 career starts. He won his last eight races at home (6 group stakes) before debuting in North America with a nice win in the G3 American Stakes at Santa Anita in May, 2015. He went on to a pair of disappointing fifth place finishes - the G1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in June and the G2 Del Mar Mile in August of that year. He has been up and down since - an eighth last time out way back on June 25 followed a fourth in the G2 Charles Whittimgham Memorial Stakes on this track May 29 and three straight third place finishes including the G3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate April 30, in the G3 Frank E Kilroe Mile March 30 and in the G2 San Gabriel Stakes January 2. Bal a Bali has been a tad tough to figure out and has failed to place in his last two starts overall. He shoots for his first win in17 months Saturday from the rail with Javier Castellano aboard.
