Sam Houston Race Park is a horse racing track located in unincorporated northwest Houston, Texas. The park hosts both Thoroughbred and American Quarter Horse racing meets.
The park opened on April 24, 1994 and is the first Class 1 Horse Racing venue constructed in Texas. It cost approximately $90 million to construct and is used as a concert venue when races aren't being held.
The race track hosts two live race meets annually. Thoroughbred horse racing runs from January till March. American Quarter Horse races are held from March through May.
The turf track is 7/8 of a mile. It is 80 feet wide when the poles are in the zero rail position; 71 feet wide when the poles are in the 9 foot rail position; and 62 feet wide when the poles are in the 18 foot rail position. In the summer, the track is made up of one-inch deep 419 Hybrid Bermuda grass. In the winter, it is made up of one-inch deep Rye grass.
