2016 Pattison Canadian International Race Preview at Woodbine Racetrack

Idaho 5-2 - Irish bred Aidan O'Brien trained colt has placed in six of eight career starts - two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. He enters off a DNF as favorite after unseating his rider in the Group 1 St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster September 10, a win in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York August 17, a second in the Group 1 Irish Derby June 24 and consecutive thirds including the Group 1 Investec Derby June 4. Outside of one bad outing (last time out), Idaho has been very competitive so far. He hopes to continue that trend in his North American debut. Ryan Moore will be in the saddle of the morning line favorite from post 3.

Protectionist 3-1 - winner of the prestigious Melbourne Cup in 2014 - German bred Andreas Wohler trained entry has eight wins, three seconds and a third place finish in 21 career starts. He enters in career-best form having posted three straight wins. Last time out was in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin August 14 after the Group 2 Grosser Hansa-Preis in July and an Allowance in June. He failed to place in eight straight races before that. Protectionist also won a Group 1 race and two Group 2s in 2014. He has shown form in the past and is certainly trending upward again. Eduardo Pedroza has been tabbed to ride the morning line second choice from the outside post 9.

Dartmouth 7-2 - British bred Sir Michael R. Stoute trained colt has placed in 10 of 14 career starts - seven wins, a second and two third place finishes. He makes his North American debut in very good form - a third last time out in the Group 3 Legacy Cup September 17 followed a third in the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July and three straight wins - the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes in June, the Group 3 Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes in May and the another Group 3 stakes in April. He has placed in six straight races ahead of this weekend - all stakes and is one of the many interesting European invaders for this race - this one represents the Queen! William Buick gets the call on the intriguing third betting choice from post 5.

Erupt 6-1 - Francis-Henri Graffard trained colt has four wins, a second and a third place finish in 11 career starts - his best results came in 2015 when he won the Group 1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris in July and the Group 3 Prix du Lys Longines in June. He makes his North American debut in so-so form - an OK third in the Group 3 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville August 28 followed a fifth in the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July, a second in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud July 3, a ninth in the Group 1 Prix d'lsphahan in May and off-the-board finishes in three straight Group races to end his 2015 campaign. He has placed in just two of his last seven starts overall and shoots for his first win in 16 months Sunday. Stephane Pasquier has been tabbed to ride from gate 8.

The Pizza Man 8-1 - Roger Brueggemann trained gelding was terrific in the summer of 2015 - wins in the G3 Stars and Stripes Stakes in July and the G1 Arlington Millions in August were followed by a second in the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland last October. He also won the G2 Hollywood Turf Cup in November of last year. The Pizza Man has largely struggled in four starts this year but rediscovered his form last time out when he won the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes on this track September 17. Before that was a sixth in the G1 Arlington Millions, a fourth in the G3 Stars and Stripes Stakes in July, another fourth in the G2 Wise Dan Stakes in June and a fifth in the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap in February. He has shown form in the past, has 17 wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 31 career and will be out to build a new streak Sunday. Flavien Prat will be in the irons from gate 4.

Wake Forest 10-1 - German bred Chad Brown Group 3 winner at home has seven wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 16 career starts. He made his North American debut last August and finished sixth in the G1 Arlington Millions and was forced to the sidelines for eight months. He returned April 2 and posted a respectable second in the G2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream and followed that with a terrific win in the G1 Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park May 14. After that was an OK third in the G1 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park July 3 and an uber-disappointing tenth in the G1 Arlington Millions August 13. Last time out was a bounce back - an OK second behind The Pizza Man in the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes here September 17. Wake Forest has been up-and-down but has placed in four of his last five starts ahead of this weekend. Javier Castellano rides from gate 6.

World Approval 10-1 - Mark Casse trained gelding has six wins, two seconds and four third place finishes in 17 career starts. He put his name on the radar with a win in July, 2015 in the G3 American Derby and has been decent since. Last time out was an OK third behind The Pizza Man and Wake Forest in the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes here September 17. That result followed a disappointing seventh in the G 1 Arlington Millions August 13, a good win in the G1 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park July 3, an OK third behind the terrific Flintshire in the G1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park June 11, a second in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic May 7, another second in the G2 Muniz Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds in March and an Allowance Optional Claiming score three weeks before that. He also won the G3 Saranac Stakes last year. World Approval has been competitive virtually every time out and has placed in six of his last seven starts ahead of this weekend and will have Julien Leparoux aboard from gate 2.

Danish Dynaformer 10-1 - only local entry - Roger Attfield trained colt has five wins, a second and a third place finish in 16 career starts. He won the G3 Singspiel Stakes on this track in July - the only time he's placed in his last seven starts overall. Results over that span include a fifth last time out in the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes here September 17, another fifth in the G1 Arlington Millions, a sixth in the G1 Woodford Reserve Classic in May, a seventh in last year's G1 Pattison Canadian International and a sixth in last year's Northern Dancer. Outside of one start (three back) Danish Dynaformer has been underwhelming to say the least. He tries to channel his Singspiel form with Joel Rosario in the saddle from the rail.

Taghleeb 20-1 - Michael Maker trainee has four wins, four seconds and four third place finishes in 21 career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut off a decent win in the minor Remington Green Stakes September 25, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming July 11 at Kentucky Downs and off-the-board finishes in four prior starts. Taghleeb steps up in so-so form and will be out to make a statement Sunday. Florent Geroux will be in the irons from post 7.
