Undefeated Tommy Jo earned her way into the $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with a sparkling 6 ½-length victory in the $300,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) on Aug. 30 at Saratoga.
The Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Into Mischief out of the Pioneerof the Nile mare Mother Mother ran her record to 2-for-2 in the 7-furlong Spinaway, a Win and You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.
The Spendthrift Farm LLC homebred, named for the granddaughter of Spendthrift owner and President Eric Gustavson, began her career with a handy score in a 6-furlong maiden race at Saratoga on July 26.
Sent off as the 4-1 second choice in the field of nine, Tommy Jo settled in fifth under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez before beginning to pick off horses approaching the turn. She continued that move while three wide rounding the bend and took command turning for home while still under a hand ride. She received only mild encouragement in the stretch while finishing 3 3/4 lengths clear of Tennessee Belle, who easily broke her maiden in her next start.
Jumping immediately into the graded stakes ranks, Tommy Jo had no problem handling the added furlong and heightened competition of the Spinaway.
Ridden this time by Kendrick Carmouche, the even-money favorite in the field of seven broke alertly and briefly contended for the lead before tucking in behind two other dueling fillies. Tommy Jo was again patiently ridden as she stalked the front-runners through fractions of 22.22 and 44.54 seconds, waiting until midway round the turn to make her move. She easily put the front-runners away entering the stretch while three wide and quickly pulled clear of her rivals under a light drive before being geared down with 70 yards to go and hitting the wire in 1:23.39.
Tommy Jo kept her record perfect, via disqualification, in the Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 3. She was bumped by pacesetting Percy's Bar leaving the furlong pole after drawing on near-even terms. Tommy Jo finished 2 3/4 lengths behind Percy's Bar but was elevated to first via disqualification.
Iron Orchard improved to 3-for-3 with a hard-fought victory in the Frizette Stakes (G1) at Aqueduct on Oct. 4, keeping her on course for a possible start in the $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Oct. 31 at Del Mar.
Iron Orchard's trainer, Danny Gargan, was noncommittal about the Juvenile Fillies immediately after the race. But the Frizette was part of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Dozen series, so her win earned her a $30,000 bonus that can be used toward pre-entry and entry fees at the World Championships.
The word was out on Iron Orchard prior to her debut in a 5 ½-furlong maiden race for New York-breds on July 3 at Saratoga. She ran to her 3-5 odds, breaking sharply under jockey Joel Rosario and cruising on the pace to a 5 ½-length victory despite being geared down passing the eighth pole.
The filly used the same template against state-bred foes in the $150,000 Seeking the Ante Stakes, run at 6 furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 22. She quickly opened a half-length lead and held it until the top of the stretch, when she spurted clear under mild encouragement from Rosario and then coasted under the wire 6 ¾ lengths to the good of the runner-up.
Iron Orchard jumped another couple rungs up the class ladder in the Frizette, tackling open company and graded stakes foes for the first time.
With Rosario back in the irons, she again broke alertly but was taken back to a stalking position and slid back to sixth, 2 ½ lengths behind pacesetter Carmel Coast as the latter carved out a sizzling 44.84split for the half-mile. Iron Orchard began to rally four wide rounding the turn and then inhaled the leaders at the top of the stretch as Rileytole came through on the rail to briefly hit the front. Those two dueled to the wire, with Iron Orchard prevailing by a nose in 1:35.97.
Iron Orchard, a daughter of Authentic out of the Brethren mare Onebrethatatime, is owned by CSLR Racing Partners and R. A. Hill Stable. Bred in New York by Pine Ridge Stable LLC, she was purchased for $500,000 at the April Ocala Breeders' spring sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Bottle of Rouge kept it all in the family in capturing the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante (G1) at Del Mar on Sept. 6, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his 12th win in the 7-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies and her owner, Baffert's wife Jill, her first.
Baffert the trainer did not immediately commit the daughter of Vino Rosso out of Bluegrass Cat mare Blues Corner to the $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies(G1) on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. But a victory over the track where the Breeders' Cup races will be run will surely tempt him and his bride to consider that option.
The longest price of three Baffert-trained runners in the Debutante at 9.10-1, Bottle of Rouge and Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith settled outside in fourth, then fifth as favored stablemate Explora (3 -5) outran several early rivals to complete the half-mile in 44.62.
Bottle of Rouge made her move on the turn while four wide and wore down Explora inside the sixteenth pole before crossing the wire in 1:23.05, a length to the good of her stablemate.
The Debutante was the third race and second victory for the filly, bred in Kentucky by Kathie Maybee.
She debuted on June 12 at Santa Anita in a 5-furlong maiden dash, racing off the pace under Kazushi Kimura and finishing well to grab second, 6 lengths behind stablemate Himika.
Bottle of Rouge took a major step forward in her second start, a 6 ½-furlong maiden test at Del Mar on Aug. 9. Ridden this time by Juan Hernandez, she showed more speed to race just off the leader on the inside before engaging that one midway up the backstretch and dueling to the top of the stretch. She quickly drew clear at that point and coasted home to win by 6 ¾ lengths in 1:16.91.
Purchased for a relatively modest $100,000 at the Keeneland September sale as a yearling, Bottle of Rouge has more than repaid that investment with earnings of $240,000.
A near miss by the lightly raced La Wally in her first graded stakes try - the Del Mar Debutante (G1) - encouraged her connections to aim her for the $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Oct. 31 at Del Mar.
Trained by Mark Glatt and ridden in all of her starts by Antonio Fresu, La Wally won at first asking on July 19 at Del Mar in a 5-furlong maiden race. The daughter of Constitution out of the Gemologist mare Moonstone got a perfect trip, breaking alertly and stalking two dueling pace-setters before surging in the stretch to beat even-money favorite Cherry Cider by a nose in 58.25 seconds.
La Wally immediately was catapulted into the graded stakes ranks in the Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 6 at 7 furlongs. She was bumped lightly at the break and was next to last early in the field of seven as the leaders carved out solid fractions of 22.05 and 44.62 seconds. She saved ground around the turn before shifting out in the upper stretch and unleashing another strong finish to check in third, just 1 ½ lengths behind Bottle of Rouge, the winner and also a candidate for the NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
La Wally made her two-turn debut at Santa Anita on Oct. 4 in the 1 1/16-mile Oak Leaf (G2). She rallied to finish second of six but was no threat to the heavy favorite Explora who won by 4 ¼ lengths.
La Wally's running style and sire both suggest longer races are within the filly's scope. Her dam was primarily a sprinter and synthetic track specialist, but is a half-sister to 2020 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Shedaresthedevil.
La Wally, apparently named after an obscure 1882 opera by Alfredo Catalani, was bred in Kentucky by Gage Hill Stable II, LLC, W.S. Farish and Ken Langone and purchased at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale for $300,000 by Muir Hut Stables LLC.
It took only a single race for the connections of the filly Meaning to decide to point her toward the $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Oct. 31 at Del Mar.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, Kentucky-bred Meaning was sent off as the 1-5 favorite in a 6 ½-furlong maiden race at Los Alamitos on Sept. 20.
She broke a half-step slow and settled in fourth briefly before jockey Umberto Rispolil gunned her through an inside opening to challenge a dueling duo of front-runners passing the five-eighths pole. She quickly took over the lead, then fended off a challenge by Thank You India rounding the turn before drawing clear of that rival at the top of the stretch. Meaning received a couple taps of the crop in the upper stretch and was ridden out until just before crossing the wire in 1:15.88, 3 ½ lengths clear of Thank You India.
The daughter of Gun Runner out of the Into Mischief mare Figure of Speech is owned by Bridlewood Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, who purchased her for $440,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale from breeder Stonehaven Steadings.
The Juvenile Fillies, contested at 1 1/16 miles, would be Meaning's first start around two turns, but both her sire and damsire were elite performers routing, suggesting that longer distances could be to her liking. Her dam won one of four sprints, but was graded-stakes placed by virtue of her third-place finish in the 2019 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
La Ville Lumiere has shown promise in her young career. The 2-year-old filly has made four starts and is already graded-stakes placed.
She made her debut at Santa Anita on May 16 in a maiden test going 4 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Although La Ville Lumiere led in the stretch, she ended up finishing second to betting favorite Light Won Up by 1 ¼ lengths. However, La Ville Lumiere was 5 ¾ lengths in front of the next competitor.
Off that initial effort, La Ville Lumiere switched to the turf for her next start, which came in a 5-furlong maiden event at Santa Anita on May 30. This time, La Ville Lumiere was sent off as the heavy favorite, and she rewarded her backers when she pulled away to defeat Velvet Dream by 1 ¼ lengths.
La Ville Lumiere took on stakes company for her third start. It came in the Sept. 6 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes (Listed) going a mile. She faced 10 other fillies and although she was in the mix, La Ville Lumiere ultimately finished fifth. The race was won by Dreaming of Alys.
For her fourth start, La Ville Lumiere moved up to graded stakes company. She faced five others in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G2) on Oct. 4 at Santa Anita. The race is held at 1 1/16 miles. La Ville Lumiere stalked from along the rail and finished third behind Explora and La Wally.
Michael McCarthy trains La Ville Lumiere for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Sabby Racing LLC and Ken Reimer. Eclipse acquired the filly for $475,000 at the OBS 2-year-olds in training sale this March.
Corser Thoroughbreds bred La Ville Lumiere in Kentucky. She is by City of Light and out of the Malibu Moon mare Malibu Drive. La Ville Lumiere is French for City of Light, the nickname for Paris.
