Las Vegas, NV - The Breeders' Cup Mile takes place this Saturday, November 1 from Santa Anita in Arcadia, California. A purse of $2 million will be on the line for horses three years old and upward willing to go one mile on Santa Anita's turf track.
The Breeders' Cup Mile has attracted a full field of 14 plus one Also Eligible to go in race 11 on Santa Anita's stacked Saturday card. Post time is 4:40 PM. Here is a glimpse into the credentials of all 15 possible entries for this Grade 1 Breeders' Cup stakes.
Toronado 5-2 - Impressive Irish bred colt has six wins and three second place finishes in 11 career starts. He is coming off consecutive seconds - the last being the Group 1 Qatar Prix de Moulin De Longchamp September 14. With Wise Dan out of the mix Toronado has gained favorite status Saturday. Richard Hughes rides from post 5.
Anodin 6-1 - Another Irish bred colt has two good runner-up finishes in his last four starts - both Group 1 races - the last coming two back at Deauville and the other coming in May at Longchamp. He is coming off a disappointing fifth in the Group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret but has looked good in top company at home. Olivier Peslier has the mount aboard the second choice from post 9.
Seek Again 6-1 - Bill Mott pupil had seven starts in Britain that yielded three wins and two second place finishes including a win at York. He made his North American debut last December 1 and won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park and followed that with a second behind Wise Dan in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs May 3, an OK third in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park June 7 and another terrific win - in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap August 9. Seek Again is coming off a very disappointing sixth in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile but is still a dangerous entry this weekend. Joel Rosario will be in the saddle from post 12.
Mustajeeb 6-1 - British bred colt has placed in six of seven career starts - three wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He has alternated wins and second place finishes in his last six starts - a win would complete the pattern. Patrick Smullen will be in the reins from post 4.
Obviously 8-1 - Irish bred gelding has two wins in three starts this year - the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on this track in June and the Grade 3 American Stakes in May - he has won both of those races two straight years. He enters off a disappointing fourth in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap - also a race that he'd won before. He finished third in this race in 2012 and fifth in 2013 and will be out to better that result this weekend. Joe Talamo gets the call from gate 2.
Karakontie 10-1 - had three wins and two seconds in his first five career starts overseas including wins in a Group 3 race and a Group 1 at Longchamp in May. However he is coming off an eighth in a Group 1 October 5 and an eighth in another Group 1 at Chantilly in June. Not sure what to make of Karakonite as he leaves from the outside post with Stephane Pasquier aboard.
Trade Storm 12-1 - British bred entry has a win and three second place finishes in seven starts this year - five wins, five seconds and three third place finishes in 34 career starts. He is coming off a terrific win in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile at Woodbine September 14 - a race he finished third in 2013. Before the win was two straight runner up finishes - the last being a stakes at York August 23 and in Dubai - against some quality fields. Trade Storm is definitely trending upward and will have Jamie Spencer in the irons from post 8.

Veda - French bred filly is coming off a second in a Group 2 race at Longchamp October 4 and she did have a second in a Group 1 in May. Veda has a win and two seconds in four starts this year but looks a tad outclassed in this one. Christophe Soumillon has the mount from post 3.
Tourist 12-1 - Bill Mott trained colt won three straight races this summer including the minor Sir Cat Stakes at Saratoga in July and finished a good second in his graded stakes debut last time out - the Grade 1 Secretariat at Arlington August 16. Tourist has been competitive in every race this year and should be again Saturday. Rosie Napravnik has been tabbed to ride from post 13.
Tom's Tribute 15-1 - has three wins, a second and a third place finish this year and has won three of his last four - the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile last time out August 24, the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes in July and the minor Thunder Road Stakes in April. His other result over that span was a third behind Obviously in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile. Tom's Tribute is definitely trending upward ahead of this weekend. The legendary Mike Smith has the mount from post 6 Saturday.
Grand Arch 20-1 has been in every race this year - a second last time out in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes followed a disappointing fifth in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile September 14. Grand Arch posted some good results in the summer however - a win in the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes at Woodbine in June and a second in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap in August. He was a win, three seconds and a third place finish in six starts this year - competitive every time out. He starts from the rail with John Velazquez in the reins.
Kaigun 20-1 - Mark Casse trained gelding has finished second in three Grade 1 stakes this year - the Woodbine Miles in September, the Manhattan Stakes in June and the Maker's Mile in Keeneland. He also won the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes at Woodbine in August but finished fourth last time out in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile. Kaigun has nine starts this year with two wins and three second place finishes - competitive at times - not so much at others. He leaves from post 7 with Patrick Husbands aboard.
Sayaad 30-1 - Kiaran McLaughlin pupil has 14 career starts with five wins, two seconds and a third place finish and enters off a third in the Shadwell Turf Mile October 4, a fourth in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap August 30, a fifth in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap August 9 and a nice three race win streak including the minor Forbidden Apple Stakes at Belmont Park and the minor Dance of Life Stakes August 25. Sayaad makes just his fifth start of 2014 Saturday in OK form. Julien Leparoux has been tabbed to ride from post 11.
Summer Front 30-1 - Seven time stakes winner and Christophe Clement trainee is coming off three straight seconds - last time out in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes in July, to Obviously in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita June 14 and in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes at Belmont Park May 3. He also had a terrific win in the Grade 2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes January 11 and a good second to Silentio in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park November 29. He had wins last year in the Grade 3 Matchmaker at Monmouth Park August 25 and in the Grade 3 Miami Mile at Calder in April. Summer Front hopes to snap his string of runner-up finishes with Javier Castellano in the reins from gate 10.
Mr. Commons - Alternate Entry has finished fifth in this race - in 2011 and 2012. He is coming off consecutive seconds - in the Grade 2 City of Hope Stakes on this track October 4 and in an Allowance in October - his only two starts this year. He hasn't posted victory since February 2012 and will be in tough if he does indeed start.
