Another year of Triple Crown racing comes to a close with the 144th Belmont Stakes over and done with. For the first time in a while, the sport of horse racing took up some pages in almost every publication in North America.
Wow... now that I'll Have Another has been scratched, it really takes the wind out of the sails of this big day. Nevertheless, the race will be run, so here are some observations.
I'll Have Another's bid for a Triple Crown ended Friday morning with the shocking news that the horse was out of the Belmont Stakes because of a swollen left front tendon. Trainer Doug O'Neill made the announcement on Dan Patrick's radio show this morning that I'll Have Another will be scratched from the 2012 Belmont Stakes and also retired.
The Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap is on tap this Saturday, June 9th from Betfair Hollywood Park. Three year old fillies will be chasing their share of the $150,000 purse when they go 1 1/8 miles on Hollywood Park's main track.
The 44th running of the Grade 1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap comes our way from Betfair Hollywood Park this Saturday June 9th. $250,000 is on the line for three year olds willing to go 1-1/4 miles on Hollywood Park's turf track.
The Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes comes our way this Sunday, June 10th from Monmouth Park on the Jersey Shore. Horses three years old and upward will go 1 1/8 miles on Monmouth's turf track in search of their share of the $200,000 purse. The Monmouth Stakes is an important prep race for those looking to contest the $500,000 Grade 1 United Nations Stakes here on July 7th.
The 27th running of the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes goes this Saturday, June 9th from Belmont Park in New York. Three year olds will try to put on a show ahead of the much anticipated Belmont Stakes as they go seven furlongs on Belmont's dirt track with $400,000 up for grabs.
The 34th running of the Grade 2 True North Handicap is slated for Belmont Park this Saturday June 9th on the Belmont Stakes card. Horses three and upward will sprint six furlongs in search of their share of the $400,000 purse.
The 140th running of the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap is on tap for this Saturday, June 9th from Belmont Park, site of the potentially historic 144th Belmont Stakes. Horses three years old and up will race 1-1/4 miles on Belmont Park's turf track for a portion of the $500,000 purse.
The 19th running of the Grade 1 Just A Game Stakes is on tap for the undercard of the Belmont Stakes this Saturday June 9th. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will race 1 mile on Belmont Park's Widener turf course for their share of the $500,000 purse.
